Default 2002 Mercruiser 496 Mag CPS question

All,

I am new to this forum but wanted to reach out. I just bought a boat with a 2002 496 Mag Base model Bravo III outdrive. Serial Number M084202

The head gaskets went out on my first outing. It over heated and I shut it down and was towed in. I took it to the shop and they replaced the head gaskets.

It started twice but It had very high RPM, then would not start. Two beeps every two minutes. I bought a scan tool to troubleshoot, It showed high TPS.

We replaced the TPS, but still wouldn't start and could not clear the codes. I pulled the ECM (ECM 555) and sent it for evaluation. Diagnosed as short in ground burned up the ECM. They repaired it and it is on its way back with instructions to identify the short before plugging it back in. (They thought a sensor/IAC but could not rule anything out.)

The mechanic is thinking the cps might be bad as well since there were no rpm showing while cranking. I saw your posts regarding the cps no longer being made and having to replace the timing gear and cover to get the new cps to work.

However, that appeared to be for serial numbers 0M026000 - 0M319190 which use part number 881666 , was black and is NLA.

When I look up the sensor for my engine serial number on marineengin.com, it only lists part number
892615002. Does this mean, I got lucky and the sensor for my engine is not NLA?

Your advise is appreciated.

thank you,
wmrath

I hate helping out when a competitor is used per what I do as well --- ecm / pcm repair plus they never give out the info so it does not happen again per what needs to be looked at / fixed on the engine side.

Here is were I am coming from, This has become so common - the competitor offers zero help after the fact plus how many boats have they wrenched on ? Then after the fact I get the call or PM asking for help while the competitor made the money on that app.

I will give out a freebe -- NO tach --- no rpms --- no start = CRANK POSITION SENSOR remember that next time who help and who most likely would not have nor come up here to post the fix. Thank you

Thank you for the response. I did not mean to step on any toes. I thought this was a forum to for boaters to ask questions. I am new to this forum and did not know I even mentioned a competitor.
I was trying to provide some history so as to help answer my question and how I came to my conclusion. I thought the knowledge about the ECM being bad might help

My question was not, Is it the CPS but which CPS do I need?

All the posts I have read only talk about two different version of the CPS (2001 - part no : GM 12575182/Mercury 881666 and 2004+ - part no:GM 12591720/Mercury 892615002

I did see the post by hog with the three different timing gears, but did not see a reference to the CPS for the 2002-2003 gear.

This prompted me to research three CPS versions:

2001 - Part No: GM 12575182/mercury 881666
2002-2003 - Part No: GM 12575183
2004+ Part No: GM 12591720/Mercury 892615002

If I were to go with the newer tan colored CPS, I understand it would entail replacing the timing gear and timing cover to handle the new CPS configuration.

I can get the older CPS both the 12575182 and 12575183 which are physically indistinguishable from each other but have slightly different operating parameters. Knowing I have a 2002 engine and never seeing any posts regarding the 12575183 for marine applications, my question is, based on the Engine serial number, is it a 2001 configuration or 2002 configuration and which CPS it right for my application (12575182 or 12575183)?

Thanks again for your time and patience as I am new to the larger engines and boats, having moved from a Volvo 4.3GL in a 18ft Larson to a Mercruiser 8.1L in a 28ft Crownline. I do most of the work myself (manifolds, risers, tune up, oil change, impeller, trailer, etc) but this boat/engine is new to me and the learning curve is a little steep for a novice.

In all the forums I have read, BUP appears to be the absolute expert and is mentioned on every forum I have read regarding this matter and was really hoping he would chime in..

2002-2003 - GM 12575183, Standard PC 949, Merc 881666 NLA, Block 2XA, 2XW, 3XA, 3XW

Thank you AllDodge!

I appreciate the help!

Maybe I can get back on the water this weekend!

Again..Thank you AltDodge...I have the CPS coming from RockAuto. You confirmed what I was thinking would be the correct CPS.

BTW...anyone needing the 2001 version of the CPS...they are available at RockAuto as well: ... I am not allowed to post urls yet but just look up
Holstien Part Number: 2CAM0184 or Standard Parts Part Number PC948 on the RockAuto website.

Kind of ironic that the guy who refuses to pay for any type of membership and who uses OSO for free to solicit business would get his panties in bunch about this.

Don’t want to ruffle anybody’s feathers, but I’ve been thinking the same thing as well, why does offshoreonly allow this?
