Default Which cool fuel do I have?

Hello,

I’m trying to find out which cool fuel I have. I put in my serial number on the merc site and it falls under 496 mag, not ho. Not sure if it matters.

My serial number is 0w060666. Can anyone confirm which module I have?

Thank you!

Hello,

I definitely have the fuel cool 3. What I wanted to know is if mine has the newer module. I don’t think I do because my engine was built in August of 04.

I did not run your serial number but that should be a Merc gen 2 cool fuel. MAG or HO does not matter for the cool fuel -- OEM stock apps I am talking about

All the cool fuels have their own issues over time. and of course the older VST had its own issues

edit ---- YOU do have the GEN 3 cool fuel. Issues will be the complete fuel system will have paint peeling

I gave out the wrong answer above being a GEN 2 cool fuel. I think I was off 667 engines.. Did not look up your serial number until now

Yours is the first design of the Gen 3. Later due to paint and such Merc changed the design to do away with single stud hose assembly.

The pump has been replaced with ones which use barbed fittings 864650A13 later changed to part number 8M0047215

U R right he does have the GEN 3 cool fuel - I just looked it up by serial number, that what I get for not looking it up. by engine serial number. . Good luck with it cause the paint issues are 100 percent and no way around it.

The paint issues are all the way up to late 2017

the simplest way to know what cool fuel one has from Mercruiser is -- If you have a spin on water sep fuel filter and all fuel system / module is mounted low on the engine side then you have GEN 2 cool fuel - If you have NO spin on water sep fuel filter and have a LATE 2005 MODEL app then you will have the GEN 3 cool fuel - the paint peeler internally. AND again this was all the way up to 2017 of having paint issues with the GEN 3 cool fuel . .

Thank you for the replies. I spoke with mercruiser this morning. They confirmed, like everyone else that this module will have the paint.

I told him that I wanted to pull the injectors to have them cleaned (by bup) and said to have the dealer check them. He said if there is damage or paint in the injectors mercruiser may work with me and the dealer to get the problem fixed. I don’t know how much mercruiser would help. He also wanted to know if I checked my fuel pressure.

My first question is it hard to check the fuel pressure and what gauge do I need? Second, what are your thoughts on having the dealer pull the injectors and module? Do you think they would give any credit to the cost? I really don’t know what my dealer would charge for this.

Thank you,

Lou

Thanks for putting my name in the mix. Many have been turned down and ended up being a total waste off time plus an expense for the boater. Your dealer is going to send the injectors out for examination anyways. Most dealers do not have the proper equipment to test and service injectors professionally. .

The dealer will have charges for removal and replacing for the total process. . If Merc was willing to help all, then they would have QUIT putting paint internally of the gen 3 cool fuel instead having many years of paint shedding.. .. Again the paint issue was from late 2005 thru 2017 models and is so commonly known plus many have barked as Merc for this issue. .

. Actually prob I was one of the first ones who found this mess because I have been servicing marine fuel injectors for almost 13 years personally with proper testing equipment. . We seen paint start shedding within 2 years of gen 3 cool fuels being new in many Mercruiser models including the 496. .If you need any help regardless about any of it, I am easily found.. THANKS

I don’t know how much has changed since I retired a few years ago. But back then the way MerCruiser looked at how much to help $$$$ on this problem was.

1. How often you buy a new MerCruiser engine. They try harder to help out people that buy new. Not so much help for people that buy used.

2. How common the problem is. When this paint problem first started showing up they felt it was a customer induced issue, i.e. buying cheap gas station fuel instead of Marina gas or using non MerCruiser fuel additives. Because at first the paint was only coming off of a small number of fuel cells. They have since learned that almost all of the painted pumps will have this problem. So they started helping out more with some “good will” $$$$$.

How we the dealer looked at how much to help.

1. Did the customer buy from us?

2. How often does the customer buy a new boat?

3. Is the customer a “good” customer? Do they bring their boat in for service on a regular basis? Are they always complaining about something?

I don’t know if this has changed, but back then MerCruiser wanted us to buy new injectors from them rather then have them cleaned. They would usually send the injectors “no charge” because we were a very good dealer for them and we only worked on boats that had been purchased from us.

Injectors for your engine from MerCruiser are $230 or $370 each depending on if you have 2 hole or 3 hole. So even if they do a 50% price for you. You will still get a better deal from BUP.

^^^ correct - and what maintenance records does the current owner have - was he the buyer when the boat was new ? And to find a dealer whom will do a lot of leg work for you. Not easy to find these days unless you really support a OEM dealer. Most boaters work on their own stuff and really do not support a dealer for buying parts nor do they use a dealer for winterization or summerizations. Not saying all boaters but the norm is most do not. . It is what is and realized by many dealers whom will not waste the time for a boater whom does not support them. Just saying how it is. I am just stating the norm MOST OF THE TIME.

If you have a history of buying the products and or know some names that would count - then possible some help could be awarded. And if you really support the oems and oem dealers many would be willing to help.

Sometimes a boater can get lucky and get what is needed -- it just depends

Hello,

i ordered my boat with my dealer and they have done all of the maintenance on the boat. The only exception is the oil changes, spark plugs and wires which I do. I even store the boat with them.

I have never been worried about my dealer working on my boat. I’m trying to save money for any future repairs I may need and that is why I am thinking of doing the injectors myself. I have a hard time thinking mercruiser will offer any help on a 15 year old boat.
