St. Pete Beach, Sarasota, Fort Myers Beach, and every other beach on the west coast of Florida was packed today. The crowd in Clearwater had nothing to do with the dozen or so boats that are in town. The parade was NOT well attended, especially compared to similar events. This “event” is an abject failure and embarrassment to this community and the sport. I’m disappointed in this “press release.”

He quoted photographer Pete Boden, who has covered a few offshore races, as saying the crowd at the parade was "good" and that the beaches were "packed." Now, we all know that most people on the beach during any given offshore race—including those you produced—are not there for the race. (Then again, Mike, it is a time-honored tradition—yours included as I recall—for race producers to call every beach-goer a "fan.") And even given all that, Pete made no correlation in his quote between yesterday's test session with the crowd on the beach.
I am sorry you are disappointed with the story as reported. We don't want to disappoint any of our readers, especially one I know and respect as well as you, but it's inevitable.

Clearwater race? I saw nothing advertised about it. If these races are to become more successful, they need to let people know about it!!
I am not talking about racing / internet information..... At least a little TV ad would have been nice.

I'm going to politely disagree with your assessment of Jason Johnson's reporting of this story as a "press release." First, as you know well, press releases are generated by the entity seeking coverage. Of course, that was the point you were trying to make. But for the record, Jason did his own reporting and based on that he was able to write that the parade went "well." That's hardly the kind of gushing, self-serving praise you'd see in "press release."
