Default Is a 303 SR-1 too much for a first boat?

The offer is in, and the process begins!

It would appear I am also now in the market for a 3/4 ton pickup! I'm guessing that boat and trailer has to be close to 9K wet.

Tried unsuccessfully to buy 3 different smaller Formulas, all 252's...after the 3rd fell thru I decided it had to be the model...

The 303 was one of my favorites.....so I decided it was a sign.

I guessing my motorboating merit badge from Boy Scout summer camp in 1976 doesn't apply here?

Any recommendations for boating courses, insanity therapy, etc are welcome...

Congrats on the futur boat! No it wont be too big! Just take it slow slow slow and you will be good... there is a neutral position on the drive so use it instead of using reverse because you came in too fast! The rest is only fun! And no you dont need a 2500 truck a 1500 is enough depending on year and power look how many pulls 32 sunsation for example with 1500 or yukon tahoe...

now post pictures!

I went through this one year ago and ended up with a Formula 311. Take an online boating course to remind you of all the things you don't remember and also maybe help with insurance and Licensing/registering the boat.
I found a V10 Ford Excursion that barely gets 10 miles per gallon but it is perfect for just getting the boat to and from the ramp and it was quite inexpensive. Go slow, go very very slow as there is a lot of mass. Get your significant other or a great friend and quietly and privately go play around an empty ramp and & or dock.
Finally, after owning for a year I am glad I did not go smaller. The size was overwhelming at first as my last boat was barely 16 feet. But as I am getting used to it I am glad I got the biggest and most powerful boat I could afford.

If you are pulling a 32' twin big block with a 1/2 ton Tahoe, you are a danger to everyone on the road. You need a 3/4 ton.

Default 1/2 too light

The 1/2 ton is not stout enough to SAFELY TOW that boat and trailer . boat alone is 7300 dry. Trailer has got to be 2000. =9300 plus gas and gear. I tow my 272 with a 2019 tahoe. It can tow it straight no problem but short wheel base and suspension is not safe above 65mph. I have towed it with my 2500hd like nothing.
remember that you gotta add on the trailer weight.
i wouldnt use a half to move it more than a few miles. Non highway speeds.

Yes there are new 1/2 tons that are rated for the weight BUT I wouldn’t pull close to 10k lbs with one.

Keep in mind gas is +7lbs/gallon. That can easily approach 1,000lbs. What ever you pull, make sure your hitch, ball, and receiver are rated for well more than you can tow.

My common since advice is use both motors when you load onto a trailer.
I have boated with single engine boats all my life and stuck with what I was use to and used one engine the first few times. One engine will make your boat list to one side. It was a pain until I realized otherwise. Yes I should be laughed at.

Your boat choice isn’t too big for a second boat. A smaller boat will help you get use to docking and loading. Take you time and you should be okay If you have common sense. My smaller singles got small fast. I’ve had my 32 longer than any one single engine boat I’ve owned

Don’t prepare your boat to launch at the ramp and block everyone... Have your ropes and fenders ready before you tie up anywhere. Don’t approach any dock too fast... take your time and shift into neutral occasionally.

This tow rig discussion normally turns into a turd slinging contest of my step brothers neighbors 2nd cousins dog sitters uncle had a 2007 z71 and towed his 31 Cape horn all over with no problem....

But, here goes with my personal opinion on the subject. Dragging something is about 10% of my concern. 90% of what I care about is how will this rolling mass be affected by an abrupt lane change? How quickly can I stop this 10,000 lb object attached to the back of my vehicle? It isnt just for my safety or my children who may be with me. It is for everyone's safety.

I have witnessed 1st hand the 27 open contender we fish come off the trailer, over the rear section of a Yukon and pass them in the ditch. Over 35k in damages to the Denali and the boat. Luckily no one was injured. All because someone cut them off and the driver had to quickly snatch the wheel. Sure GMC rated this vehicle to haul 10k, but after riding in it once I pleaded with my fishing partner to buy himself a 3/4 ton truck or just borrow one of mine. Since the accident he has gotten himself a nice 3/4 ton Chevrolet and is much happier and safer.

Everyone's situation is different. Idk what your parking arrangements are. Possibly you can get away with buying a $5000 94-02 dodge 2500 or 3500 and only use it to drag the boat. Maybe you have restricted parking room and must have a daily driver that will also tow. In which case I would lean hard on a newer 3/4 ton truck.

Personally I tow with 3/4 and 1 ton dodges all with good brakes and cummins engines. Nothing wrong with a big gas engine in the ford or gm trucks. Cummins is just my preferred engine.

No matter what your decision is, please consider the safety of your family and everyone elses and go with a vehicle rated to safely haul and stop your trailer.

When I went to see my 32 footer in a driveway on a trailer ... I thought man this is huge. But everything shrinks in the water. I'm glad I went this big.
