Default Adding a 525sc blower to a slightly built 454??

So looking for a little input. I have a 454 that was bored .60 over. 9.0 compression. forged crank, forged pistons, 088 rectangle port heads, micro power flow exhaust, and what is basically a 500hp cam(custom ground but basically the same with slightly more overlap but not enough to have reversion issues. I have never dynoed the motor but based on builder estimates and performance motor is making around 425-450 hp. I have the opportunity to buy a recently rebuilt factory 525 weiand 177 blower complete with new belt, 2 pulleys 4and 5lb 1050 dominator carb and all needed parts for install. Anyone have any input on if this is a feasible match or would I just be making a time bomb? I'm nor looking for crazy hp. would like to be in the 550-600 range and still be able to run pump gas.

There is no way to be able to say its a 4# pulley and 5# pulley as boost pressures will vary some based on each engine.
The stock OEM 525SC top pulley which was 3.5" made 5.5# of boost on the 525SC using the stock 7" lower pulley.
You should be able to safely run 4 lbs of boost with 9.0:1 on 93 octane fuel.

Griff, I was reading through the other thread that was very similar however I saw his questions were based on base 454 mag vs mine which has been mildly built. would the 500hp cam work well with this blower? I also saw you talking about ignition. My boat originally came with the 454 "powertuned" 300hp 454 with a bravo 3. I am still using the stock ignition and am not sure what it has for timing. I am very interested in making this happen but dont want to turn a perfect running motor into and anchor. I really appreciate your time and knowledge on this matter.

The cam will work fine. I'm not familiar with the type of ignition you have. Bottom line is you will want about 32* of total advance at WOT.

I installed a 177 supercharger on a bone stock 330 horse non Mag 454. Set the total advance to 28 degrees ran 4.5-5 lbs of boost for 13 years in my 251 Convincor. The boat would run 70-71 mph @4700 rpm. After a few years I installed CMI headers, gained maybe .5-1 mph... Then I installed the Merc 420 cam made by Crane, I maybe gained another .5-1 mph. I ran that boat hard for 13 years and it never gave any issues. Finally I switched to a 24 pitch prop and spun it to 5400 rpm and it lost oil pressure and spun a main bearing. I built a new 454 with forged pistons and full roller cam Cast Iron Merlin heads and out the 177 on it. I thought I was going to have an 80+ mph boat. It only went 75. All that being said, I think that little supercharger is great for stock engines as mine was originally but they don’t perform any better to built engines. Just my experience.

your engine is perfect for the upgrade in question,550 hp can happen with the correct tuneup.
