How many of these were built?
Looking for a number on the 38' boats:
Being the proud owner of a Scarab 38 Thunder I would really like to know how many of these were built in total. I have contacted Wellcraft, but got no reply. I have also contacted a company renowned for their great knowledge in these boats, but no reply...
I know a few things about them (38' Thunder series) :
They were only produced 1992-1994.
The hulls were built using the same mold as for the standard (Excel) boats, but were constructed using a kevlar laminate referred to as "Composite Alloy Laminate" and vinylester as opposed to the regular polyester boats, resulting in a roughly 16% lighter and much stronger hull, as well as being almost complete free from the tendency to soak up water (which all polyester hulls do when left in the water for a season...).
Genuine Thunders are easily identified by the letters "C.A.L" underneath the HIN.
They were the first production powerboats ever to offer supercharged engines from the factory.
However, they didn't find enough buyers to appreciate the kevlar compared to the extra cost, and the option was dropped in 1995. The boats were then only referred to as simply "Scarab" again, with no special model name.
The hull of the 38' boat remained the same as the legendary Betty Cook world champion boat up until 1998/1999, when the step bottom AVS came out, except for the deletion of the "wrinkle" along the top sides of the hull in the late 1990s.
The boats delivered with supercharged engines also had that option written in underneath the HIN, above the letters ""C.A.L.", for example "38SC".
38 Thunders also came equipped with triple fuel cells and a few other things as standard, as opposed to the regular Excel series which could have these things as an option.
So, to my original question:
HOW MANY OF THESE, (REAL) THUNDER SERIES SCARAB 38, WERE PRODUCED IN TOTAL?
(I have seen maybe 20-30 here in the US, and a handful abroad. Does anyone know the real number, or at least have a better "guesstimation"?)
