Default Looking at a 272 SR1

Im looking at buying a 1988 Formula f272 sr1. Ive never owned a Formula and would like some input on ride characteristics. Two boats ago I boat a Checkmate ZT-260. It was a really good looking boat, but really disliked the stepped hull. The particular boat I'm looking at doesnt have the engines in it so no water check ride.

Im looking at re-building the 454's at about 500hp at the props.

Most that have owned a 272 have very favorable opinions of the boat. Not even close to the fastest hull on the water but build quality was excellent for the vintage. Hence how these birds are now 30+ years old and still desired by many. Just make sure to check carefully into the structure. Especially silent thunder/transom, gas tank bulkhead and under the front cabin. SB models are obviously much easier to work on….BB/Bravos are a nightmare to work on due to space but offer great performance. Boat is heavy in the stern but offers a fantastic ride and predictable dock manners. On my second 272 and have zero regrets.

I have owned the 223LS, 272SR1, 292SR1, and the 357SR1. Love them all and they all share very similar characteristics. As mentioned above, check the typical Formula/Thunderbird problem spots and you should be good to go. Silent Thunder, Transom (Particularly around exhaust thru hull, stringers, fuel tank bulkhead, and under the step in the cuddy.

I actually pulled the BBC engines out of the 272SR1 two weekends ago, definitely a tight squeeze especially since we left the manifolds installed for the evolution. The 272SR1 is a very versatile hull, small enough for lakes and rivers, but just large enough for bigger bodies of water. With good power, 65+ MPH is easily achieved and plenty of comfortable room for passengers. Good performance, good ride quality, unparalleled fit/finish, with a timeless overall design. Can't go wrong!

Look forward to hearing more about it and let us know if you have any other questions! Tons of knowledge here.
