Default Boat Colors and High Temps

I keep seeing boats posted up that people have built and they are super dark colors. Seems to be a trend. Not race boats…I’m talking boats we are gonna go out and use with family and friends. This beautiful Formula SSC posted comes to mind…absolutely gorgeous boat. Maybe has a lighter interior. I saw another for sale low hours…all black with deep red seats. I know that was a hot ride!

I’m trying to wrap my head around making those $3m color decisions knowing how hot it’s gonna be. I have a few colors like that on my boat and it will take skin off your feet on a mild Indiana day. A 95+ Florida summer day??? Forget about it! I realize a lot of these boats are mostly sea dek walk surfaces and that stays pretty cool…but sitting there in a seat and you lay your arm on some paint and it’s over. My buddy said oh you just wear socks.
1. I dare anyone to walk on my paint in socks. You will not stand on 2 feet without busting your tail or sliding in the water
2. who the hell wants to wear socks, we are wearing as little as possible

Just some thoughts for conversation…hey maybe they are northern boats I get it.

I live in CT, I guess that's qualifies as a northern boat? It gets plenty hot and sunny here and I can guarantee you if you stepped on the black stripes paint on my old PP it would be hotter than hell. Made me think about those dark colored boats and how people deal with them.

I’ve had builders here in FL tell me the dark gel/paint accelerates fiberglass warping over time.

people who are buying brand new dark colored cc’s probably don’t care…they won’t own it long enough.

The sun is the sun...doesn't matter where you are. Dark colors absorb more light energy.

I don't get the dark colors especially on walking/seating surfaces either. The hull sides can be dark if you are into that look. But keeping black surfaces clean, especially in salt water...forget it.

My last boat was black on the sides...really pretty Imron that stayed sparking for many years, but the seats where white. Any light grey surface in by boat, don't even touch it.

I see these back up for sale 40 hours on them, 200k under book value. Now you know why. Can't even go out on them. But at least we got some siq pics for the gram right LOL

You only own a dark colored boat once.

I was at the Lake Havasu boat show one year and happened to lean on a black painted windshield frame with my forearm. It sizzled like a ribeye on a hot grill and instantly left the skin behind. That was probably 6 or 7 years ago and I still have the scar.

My boat has a streak of dark blue in the graphics on the deck. Any time I'm on my hands and knees wiping down the deck I damn near burn my knee cap off at least once. I can't imagine having a boat with graphics made up of entirely dark colors.

My 32 is entirely light grey gel coat, it gets extremely hot during a pa summer! My wife has slip on booties with grippers on the bottom specifically for walking the deck, only way you can, can't imagine anything darker
