Default 2001 Merc 6.2L mx timing

Do i set timing on this like my '95 502 mpi? Short pins a and b. Also, do i have the rotor pointing at #1 post at TDC, or at the 8 degrees BTDC per base timing? I have it at TDC from changing head gaskets, and it's pointing to #1 currently.

Thanks.

He's asking if he would time it like you would a '95 502.

No

And no the 6.2 is not timed like the 502. A timing light is not used nor base timing. You have a HVS distributor
Bring motor to TDC on #1 then adjust distributor as shown

How do I know if I have a HVS distributor vs not? I don't have a connector on mine like that shown........ I also have 4 distributor hold down screws, not 2 as shown.

This is why it's always best to provide a serial number. Saying it's a 6.2 was telling me it's MPI and all 6.2 with MPI have HVS

And have the flat distributor cap

Not sure what to say. It's the first s/n range of the 6.2L MX motors. It is a multiport injected, if my definition of that is correct. Fuel injectors are in the intake manifold.

Buddy with a 2002 Rinker with a 6.2L MPI does not have the flat distributer cap. I know this for a fact as I took it off when we were diagnosing an engine problem that ended up being a burnt piston.
