Hello,
Can I pull my prop and spline without having to remove anything from the middle and top of the Stern drive? I believe I broke the lower shaft that the prop is on. Thnx Maury

Yes,
after the prop and anodes off front of the prop are removed
there’s 2 bolts ( 1 at 12 o’clock 1 at 6 o’clock) that need removed out of the
carrier, then it’s ready to come out, you may have to thread a slide hammer
on to the propshaft to get it out.
there also is a coupler between the clutch shaft and vertical shaft
that could have failed.

Thank you for the response. The clutch assembly is in the intermediate part of stern drive that you referred to. I am thinking this is where my problem is. I will pull top of stern drive and look for anything obvious. Then go to intermediate part. Thnx!
where can I find a seal kit for the stern dr unit. I believe I will or should replace the o rings ect... once removed. Thanks again.

I would like to elaborate on what happened to me when I lost my control/power to the prop. I was getting up on plane when I gave my throttle a bit more and the engine just went zing. A lot of idle speed and no movement of the prop. I really didn't hear any noise as the engine reved up as far as breaking anything. I can shift forward and backward and the prop spins but when I accelerate the prop doesn't move and I get nothing but the motor reving up. Any thoughts on what broke. I did check the linkage under the shifter and it is okay. Also the shift linkage under the covers plate on stern drive moves in and out of gear and appears normal. Thank you for any response!

If this is an old school 280 most likely this is the problem. Or at least what to hope it is. The coupler is designed to fail if overloaded.
Just drop the lower unit to take a look. #45 is the coupler. It connects the upper & the lower.

Thank you,
Your diagram appears to be what I have. When I lower the bottom unit if the coupler is not broke will the entire vertical shaft with the coupler drop out of the upper unit? Thanks
