Default 87 242 Ls engine issue

Looking for any help or comments. Our 87 243 Ls 454 just stopped and would not turn over. Boat was going along fine… then a loud squeal was heard, motor just stopped. Oil pressure, oil level and engine temperature all ok. Any suggestions. Engine hours approx 870 hrs

Hopefully it's not locked up. If you threw a rod I'd think you would have seen some evidence of that. A friend of mine, his boat wouldn't crank at all and the cause was water in the cylinders. Smoked a starter in the process of figuring that out.

I don’t think it was water in the cylinders. My son in law was underway she it happened. Thanks so much. Tony S

this happend to a friend of mine with a wellcraft nova, exact symptom loud squeal, then lockup..... it was the coupler plate or something bolted to the flywheel connecting to his alpha drive.
something with the rubber in it that when it failed it prevented the engine from turning over.
good luck

Just heard back from our marina. Upon inspection, a quarter size hole was found on the port side of the lower unit. The marina looked for hydro-lock. After removing plugs, no signs of hydro-lock. Motor would still not turn over. Any possibility engine water pump quit. Looking for any information or suggestions. Engine temperature and oil pressure all OK. No evidence of striking any underwater while underway.
Thanks,
Tony S

Marina will check further. Nothing mentioned about a coupler plate.
Thanks

Did they remove the drive and try to turn the engine over? Wondering if the drive is locked up and the hoke has something to do with that.
