The new Mercury racing gear oil that SB pointed out is amber in color not the greenish blue, this is what my drive guy uses even in M6 & M8's

So I have been buying the Merc racing extreme gear lube in 5 gallon buckets and changing every 20 to 25 hrs

if the Quicksilver is the same stuff I can get that for quite a bit less than the the Merc racing just not in 5 gal buckets , The Quicksilver comes in 3 gal bottles which isn’t really a big deal just dump into the 5 gal buckets

if it’s the same amber stuff don’t see any reason to spend the extra money

I dont get the oil changes at 20 hrs, if you dont have flakes in the oil I think you are throwing away good oil, below is a quote from QS website

Part Number: 8M0111677

Extreme Performance Gear Lube 8M011677 is 85W90 weight for use in outboard and sterndrive racing applications. Also for use in high‑performance gearcases used in marine, powersports, and motorsports applications. Provides maximum protection against wear. Its tackifiers and pressure additives improve oil film adhesion and protect against excessive wear. Helps prevent horsepower loss and won’t break down when gears reach high temperatures. Advanced emulsifiers protect gears if water enters the gear housing. Should be changed once each year when winterizing the engine or every 100 hours of operation.

Redline shockproof is thin yet has a sheer and contact protection of 250w.
I use it in my 6`s.
Mercury is nothing special and they sure want a bunch of $$ for oil thats $17/gallon wholesale.
The original green **** came from Bradford plant, the Kendall oil, the real Brad Penn stuff. Then mercury had Williams custom blend some base oil from South America and added green dye and cut Kendall out because it was cheaper.
I wouldn`t use any Mercury oil. so many better choices from companies that are not pinching pennies.

Getting oil sample analysis would be the way to go. I'm all for prevention etc, but if the fluid is not getting sheared up, or diluted, it's just as good as new at 20hrs.

Straight gears won't shear oil as bad as a hypoid style differential gear system.

The oil sample analysis would tell you if there was any sea water or what metalic shedding is present.

Gesr oils are not much different in viscosity form engine oils, despite the number diffs. They were labeled this way so they don't get mixed up and cross used with the massively different additive package.

To Dan's point I guess it comes down to preference, I've always run Mercury, I just had a drive rebuilt and if I choose to go to another oil besides what my drive guy uses / recommends........I have no warranty
