Hi every body,
I'm Aurelien, i'm 48 years old, i'm boat mechanic, from south of France. I bought an old BAJA 24 outlaw with a tired engine.
I need some help for repair a Mercuiser 496 mag ho 2003 model year.
The previous owner installed a rotating assembly kit on it and a whipple suprecharger.
This engine don't work correctly, the compression is only 9 bars, the connecting rods are too short... this rotating kit is not for this engine.
So my question is, which kit can i install on it with piston size of 4.310 in?
Do you have an idea? maybe a RAYLAR product? Can i install JE piston 257964 on RAYLAR kit?
Maybe there are some kit with that piston size or larger?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Aurelien

When I did my rebuild, I used Wiseco pistons and Molnar PowerAdder 6.700" rods. I already had the Kellogg forged crank, so I didn't have to worry about that, but you might consider a forged crank if your predecessor hasn't already. I was planning on using Molnar's crank until we discovered the engine was built OEM with the Kellogg crank.
FWIW... It wasn't in the budget for me, and I don't know what your budget is, but the heads are the real limiting factor for the 496. You might consider Raylar's heads while you've got it all apart. They've got a couple of good options for the cam, as well.
Thanks. Brad.

The aftermarket rotating parts for the 496 8.1 gen 7 engines typically convert the rods to a 6.7" length with a .990 pin size. This is different than they cam stock. The pistons are obviously different also to work with the .990 6.7" rods. The best bet is to call Larry at Raylar, I bet he has the parts to get you going in stock. He's got a lot of piston options for the 496.
The heads are a limiting factor on the 496. You can easily get 800HP with the Raylar heads and a Whipple. If you do chose to keep the stock iron heads, I suggest you install better springs and hardware as the factory units are too soft for performance applications. If budget allows Raylar has a set of roller rockers that fit under the stock valve covers too. And here's a tip, the Raylar BP-111-S camshaft works very well with the iron heads and a Whipple, noticeably better than the factory HO camshaft.
With the Whipple the stock oil cooler won't be enough, so plan on adding a larger oil cooler also.
