HI All, had a quick question......I have a 1993 454Mag with a mechanical fuel pump (Not sure of the brand). This weekend I had to pull the pump off to get at my raw water pump. I undid the 2 bolts that held the fuel pump on and moved it to the side. I re-installed the fuel pump after I rebuilt the raw water pump. When I went to start the boat I wasn't getting any fuel to the Carb......Just wondering what I might have done wrong....Again I didn't remove the hoses from the fuel pump just undid th 2 bolts moved it to the side then re-installed with a new gasket.
Thanks

UT OH. The fuel pump rod (rides on the cam and pushes the fuel pump plunger) often fall down when the pump is removed. Did you use some heavy grease to hold the rod up in place before you re-installed the pump? If not, its likely the rod is not sitting on the pump plunger where it belongs. You also may have now done damage to the rod or plunger. Check them carefully. If you have to get the rod out, there is a plug below the fuel pump boss that has to be removed to get the pump shaft out.

You will need to pull the pump back off too. And yea, the plug can be a pain. Its a reccessed square of some wierd size. I always end up using the square end of one of my punches as a driver. You dont need to pull the plug however. Get the pump off, put some heavy grease on the shaft (around 1/2" in dia. I think) and push it up till it bottoms on the cam. If it stays there, re-install the pump. Make sure nothing looks bent from the goof.

NO, the pump rod would have dropped away from the cam. I cant even imagine that you were able to get the pump fully seated with the rod in the way, but who knows. Check the pump plunger carefully and try and rotate the rod with your fingers to make sure nothing got bent and you shoudl be Ok I think. You will see what I mean when you get in there. Its a lot easier with the engine out I know. I hope you dont have twins, then its a lot tougher. If your fuel filter is right there, you might want to unscrew that and get it out of your way too.

If you have a 1993 454 Mag you will have a Gen V engine that has the fuel pump mounted on the seawater pump not on the engine block.
If that is the case then the pump arm will ride directly on the cam lobe inside the seawater pump. Its pretty hard to screw that up.
The most common problem is the pump sucking air instead of fuel. Are you sure that the fuel line is tight?
Sincerely

OH DOH, I get the monday Homer award. Gen 5, the pump is on the water pump, forget everything I said above, that applies to a Mark 4 block where the fuel pump is on the block. Thanks for catching my booboo Dennis.
