Question What kind of engines do I have?

I've inherited a 1986 Formula 357SR1 with the Kaama package. The engines are carbed 502's. How can I tell if they are original and how old they are?

On the starboard side of the engine at the back, above the starter is a small riveted plate to the block with mercruiser serial #. It may also be on the carb cover but the carb cover could be from a dif engine so get the # off the block. Go to the Mercruiser web site and enter in the number it will tell you what kind/year/options etc the engine was delivered.

They're probably not original, 502s were not available until around 1990.
If they're Merc engines, you can check the block code. It's on the front of the block over the timing cover or under the right cylinder head.

You've got great big engines. If they run when you turn the key you've got great big noisy engines.

I guess I know how Crazyhorse got over 2000 posts.
He is right though.
BTW doright, How do you know they're 502s and not 454s?

I don't know for sure that they are 502's. I took the boat to a racing engine builder and he told me they were. I had thought they were 454's.

Check the casting numbers (back of block top of bell housing) against the list at www.mortec.com
