How to Identify my motors ???
#1
I'm told they are stock mercruiser 440 H.p. Are there any numbers or any other way to find out what they were maufactured as....????
I'm getting ready to install these (rebuilt 5 years ago and never fired) motors, any thing i should look for?
i have them on motor stands, i pulled the oil pans to ck them out and everything looks nice and fresh, new pistons, rings, rods , rod and main bearings, and cam... any advice would be very helpful thx..
Also i would like to freshen the paint on motors whats the best paint out there for heat resistence??? thx again
Dennis moore if your out there you can chime in any time....

XCAV8,
Try this out. I'm not familiar with that engine, but maybe this will help.

On the front of the motor, either above the timing cover or under the right cylinder head, will be a number. That number indicates the Merc number for the engine. This indicates the year, hp, rotation, etc.
Check out this link for that info:

There is also a block casting number on the left rear. This will indicate what the block was cast as, 454, 4 bolt, etc.
This link covers that:
