3 ways that I can think of:
1. Transom assy. has 6 bolts on Gen 2. Gen 1 has 4.
2. Gen 2 has speedo pitot tube built in.
3. Gen 2 has internal routing of drive oil to resovoir.

If I remember right, yous is a 1990, Gen 1 Alpha 1. I think the 2nd gen started around 1992.

another difference is the Gen 2 has nuts and bolts to fasten the upper to the lower and has plastic wear plates on the side of the drive where it slides on the transom assy.

The gen II lower unit has
a swept back strut and skeg.
The gen I is straight.

The gen II transom asembly
resembles a bravo transom assy.

Easiest way to tell, Gen 2 trim cylinders are held on by E-clips, not the nuts like the Alpha One uses.
