272 Quest for speed

I hope you don't mind an A.T. guy in here but I have a Baja question. My best friend and boating partner has a 99 272 and wants to go faster. Looking for best bang for the buck on a 502 and prop advice to go with it. He has given me a $5000 limit.
Thanks in advance.

Therefore you have four posts left.I would agree with Obnox...whipple is the only way to go for the bang of the buck for speed. I have a 1996 272 25th anniversary Baja. Have not done performance upgrades because if I'm going to spend that kind of money for a whipple I would rather get a bigger boat. Plus, I see myself spending more than $5,000 if I go whipple because I would add some more things with it.

I put Gil headers on mine and picked up a couple MPH,, get the prop dialed in. Some have had luck with the " smart charge " kit for a couple MPH.
Your still only looking at MAYBE 5 mph in all that for 5k.
He should be in the low 60's now right?
