Need some info on a 40' Scarab with twin 400's, TRS drives and B/W trannies. What kind of performance would you expect from this boat? What will it run with various power levels? I have a customer who just picked one up. It runs 50 on GPS. He wants me to build some new engines to get this boat into the mid 60's. I don't know the performance charcteristics of this hull so I'm looking for some good old OSO input, which I know I can trust. How much power do I need to build?

bobl- I've got one-- an 86' had 475 hp 461's in it last year, did 60 mph, with 23 p mirage 3 - blades.

Just finished building 700 hp 588's to put into it. Hope to be around 70. These are big, heavy hulls, with a true 26 degree V. They'll take waves great, and give you lots of room. they're not a cigarette/ apache though, they have their limits. The trs is a solid drive and is nice to handle -- you need it for that much weight. As far as top speed in the mid 60's you'll need at least 550-600 hp a side minimum. These are not the most effecient hulls. Good luck with what ever you decide!

Patriyacht...The boat came from Michigan. I didn't catch the name but I'll check next chance I get. It seems to be a solid boat and just about everything works.

del sol...That's the info I was looking for. I was thinking it would need a solid 600 HP to get in the mid 60's after riding in it. Keep me posted on how yours performs once you get it sorted out.

My boat's name was Vice Versa. It had the Miami Vice blue fade paint job on it. Beautiful boat. Mine had 400's with MSD ignition, Hydromotive 23 props. Running perfectly it was good for 58 mph. It is nose heavy, maybe bravo 1's would work better.

I agree with PatriYacht, very nose heavy. I think the hull is the sama as the 377 raised deck (with platform added). I raised my X dimension 2 Inches on a staggered engine boat and removed some weight in the bow. The boat went from 56-58 w/400s to 62-63 with only 370s due to the raised drive height and decreased weight.
A friend with sise by side engines raised his drive height about 1 inch and gained 3 mph.
It sounds like a lot of work, but compared to the cost of 600hp engines, it's not too bad.
BTW, the belly tank REALLY slows that boat down, its too far forward. I ran 2 55 gal saddle tanks in the staggered engine boat.

I pulled the 2 inch spacers from the drives, and am going to try 26 pitch 4 blade bravo 1's. You're all very right the bow is heavy on these boats,-- that's why they crush waves so easily. I noticed last year though that it didn't matter if it was full of fuel 230 gallons, 2 or 8 people on the boat it would always run the same speed --- 60mph.
I like it in with the inverted arch I put a full camper/ bimini top on and it's great for the northern climate we have here-- lotsa of room
