Default After reading about the crash, I have a question.

How many of you actually fill out a float plan before you leave?

My Marina has the option to file with them. I usually let them know what my intentions are for the day or if I'll be away for a few days. If you don't return when expected then you should call, otherwise they will try to contact you, after that they let the CG know.

It's not a bad idea to let someone know what your intentions are; even if it's a neighbor or a family member. That way, the least amount of time goes by, before someone begins wondering about your wherabouts. It could make a difference.

I am assuming that people who boat alone and in the ocean are the one's that really need to do this.

Boating on a small lake really is not an issue unless you are alone, right?

And your marina gives you that option? WOW! I am pretty sure the marina where we put in could really care less.

On your first point, yes! But it can benefit all of us. I will never go out alone without telling someone where I'm going or when I expect to return. It would be something stupid like a dead battery, loose wire, or anything; Now couple that with a dead VHF or out of cell phone distance and you could be up chit's creek.

I wouldn't be nearly as worried on a small lake...Worst comes to worst, get a nap and see where you wash up.

And yes, our marina will log your trip and what your intentions are for return at your request. Just another nice touch.

Was the "Float Plan" claimed to be filed with the marina? If so, I've kept my boat there for several years and I'd bet their offices were closed at his time of departure. My guess is if he was interested in filing it earlier in the day -- they'd look at him like he was crazy. Bet they don't even know what a "Float Plan" is. If one was filed, odds are it wasn't with THAT marina.
