Default Depth gauge on Hammer

Attempting to install a depth gauge on a 98 Hammer and asked Baja where to install inside the engine compartment. They replied with, "a transducer cut out located on Star bottom 35" from transom about 3" from Keel."
I checked yesterday and there is a raised cutout at this location. A bilge float was installed on this 6" x 8" raised portion. I am assuming this is what they are refering to as the dimensions are correct. there is enough open space on the cutout to mount the transducer, but I could not get a reading here.
I began moving the transducer around and got a steady reading directly under the motor and about 28" from transom. I cannot see this area so I can't tell what is there.
EXTREMELY difficult to get to as the motor mounts and several hoses are in the way. Since it requires mixing the epoxy and pressing into place, this would be almost impossible with the motor in place. Mounting wrong with bubbles in the epoxy or if the transducer didn't seat properly would require purchasing another unless there is a way to remove from the epoxy after it has dried.
Has anyone installed one in a different area and had good results?
I'm not crazy about mounting on the outside of the transom.

Thanx in advance as always!

Hey Technicalx
When I wanted to put one in I went to the dealer, and they were no help. They thought I should have a cut out, but they had never installed one on a Hammer. I contacted Baja and they sent me a drawing that allegedly showed the location of a cut out. I still couldn't find it. I had the drain plug out and looking at the bottom of the boat and looking through the drain plug at the top side of the bottom I came to the conclusion there was no Balsa core in the center of the boat. It appeared it was solid fiberglass. I installed the guage in the dash, ran the wires and hooked up the transducer, I put the transducer in a plastig baggie full of water, sealed it and then set it under the engine, It worked fine and was about 15 to 18 inces in front of the transom. I got back mixed up some epoxy making sure not to have any air bubbles, spread it on the puck and placed it under the engine. It works great. No problems and reads at wide open. The only time you loose a reading is when it is in the air.

Ray, sounds like we working in the same area.

Did you install by working from the transom back or from the seat forward? I was literally laying on my shoulder with one arm streched under the engine, moving the sensor around until my Son said he got a reading.

Thanx!!!

I stuck it right under the middle of the oil pan just behind the board that that the bilge pump is mounted on. The transducer sealed in a baggie of water will let you move it around to get a reading, but I got readings just about everywhere behind the board.
