why are there not more performance boats ordered with this drive? less than half the cost of a #6 drive and not much more then a xr.

are they still making them? actually i just thought Merc went from the brovo right to the #6 with not much in between.

Yes Mercury stills make them. They hold the same as IIIA, About 900HP.
The reason you do not see many is probably because it is a shorter drive.
It replaced the number IV SSM, and the IIIA replaced the III SSM.
They still make them, and the parts.

Most appications that would need that HP requirements just go right to a number VI.

I think Jassman just put a set on his new 4300 NorTech, maybe he'll catch this and can give you some info on them...?

Hey Guys, I went with #5's for a few reasons. The hp on my boat is only 740hp/760tq per side, well under the 850-900 hp that the drive could handle. Also I believe there is less drag and overall weight in the water, as well as less hp loss, which will give me approx. 2 mph more on top end. Comparing new #6 vs #5 is a savings of approx. 18k per drive, thats tough to swallow. The tranny is what saves the drive, these are Huber 1330, the largest tranny made is 1500, which usually goes in a #6. I wanted to make this boat as reliable as possible, especially for the next person, even if a Whipple blower was added the hp would be around 875-900, within range for the drives, and all the internals in the motor was set up in case someone wanted to do that at a later time. Jassman, from everything ive researched the #V is the way to go with motors in the 700-800hp range for the exact reason less weight less expense. about 10grand more than a xr and 15-20 grand less than a #VI but peice of mind. 1000hp is to much pain but 700-800hp is getting very reasonable and reliable. thanks for your imput
