Default Test Run #2 seawater pump locked up!

Hey guys,

Temp hit 81 today, and thought I would take my wife for her first ride in our new Sonic. After about 10 min. of running, we made a stop in the middle of the lake and when I went to start it, the seawater pump locked up. Any ideas on what could of happen with only 1 hour on the boat? Or you just think it was an unfortunate occurrence. Also, I have fixed many pumps for friends before, and never seen one totally lockup.

26’ Sonic Prowler - 500EFI / ITS XR

Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

Belt might have been too tight, putting stress on water pump bearings.

So you think the entire pump is shot?

Can you turn it w/ belt off? Also is it a fuel pump combo seawater pump?

Do you have a sea strainer? Knock it apart and see what the autopsy reveals.

I didn’t check the belt or take it off yet. Although, The boat would start right up, so that would indicate to me “no” on the combo. I just closed it up, got it towed in, and put it up for the night.

I'll be able to figure out what happen once I get into it. I just thought that I might get some insight before making a call to Sonic about the situation.

I'd take the pump apart and post your findings before calling anybody.

Had my pump seize up on my last summer. Shredded all the belts when it do so. What happened with mine is that the impeller just finally swelled from age and seized up in the housing. Couldnt turn it by hand afterwards it was so tight. But I had over 300 hours on mine.

Alright guys...I have this thing all apart and I didn't find one thing visibly wrong. Impeller is perfect, shaft rotates smooth, fresh oil in the reservoir, and no sign of wear. Is it possible that one of the bearings on the shaft could be disintegrated internally? I have a new assembly on the way from Sonic, but I sure would like to have a resolution to what happen… Any other thoughts or input???
