The original Merc paint is a real pain to remove. Most strippers won't phase it. Sanding will work, but takes some time in the small nooks. So.....
Sand blast then repaint with PPG products. You'll need al. cleaner, alum conditioner, primer and paint. I used PPG Concept on my lowers and they turned out great.

Went through the same thing X3. Depending on shapof current pain, I DA'd everything then used corlar primer with Imron paint. Seven years later still looks like the day I squirted them.
