Default Hour Meter installation

I am about to install on hour meter on my 502 efi. What is the best method of wiring so the meter only runs while the engine runs. Alternator, Fuel Pump, Ignition...? Suggestions are appreciated.

Ignition coil, or do I want to splice into my key ignition in the dash?

The hour meter is like a clock, needs 12v
Wire it like a volt meter, 12v when ignition is on.
