I just had my 2000 540 Bulldogs rebuilt by National and put back in my Tiger. (They overheated and the head gaskets failed and got water into the block) All seems ok after 3 hours of use except for the port engine oil temp runs at 280-285 degrees while my other motor runs at 220 degrees. Water temps are both right at 180-190 degrees. Is there anything I should be looking for that could be wrong or is this an exceptable tempature to run at ?? Its going to be tough to bring it back to National with all the problems they are having at this time, so Im hoping some expert will have some advise here

I friend of mine had this type of problem. The raw water pump impeller had shredded and stopped up oil cooler.

He replaced impeller but didn't thint to look for the shrapnel in the cooler intake.

Otis, Glad to hear you have the Tiger back!

mhawkins is right on the money. Pull the raw water inlet hose off the motor and then pull the outlet hose on the raw water pump and back-flush through the oil cooler. Sounds like when the impeller got all torn up some of the shredded vanes got loose (and went into the oil cooler) do this right away because 280+ is way too hot and you'll be building a motor sooner than you want too.

The impeller on this side didnt get torn up !! But I will back flush like you stated thanks and keep the ideas rolling. Forgot to mention in 1st post that oil preesure is real good at 70-80 lbs

I wouldn't run them at 180-190, that's too hot. Merc usually puts a 142 thermostat in their raw water cooled perf. motors. More water going through the engine also means more going through the oil cooler.

If it were mine, I'd back-flush both motors because you just don't know what could be in there. I'd also pull both thermostats and check them. PatriYacht is right. 180+ is too high.

i had the same problem over the past week. my problem was simple, i had too much oil in the port side and the oil was getting heated. quick fix for me, but i over looked it. i put a call in to tres and he put me on the right track. sometimes its the simple things that elude us... dave
