502 MPI - Redline on the Volts Gauge... Help.?

So the situation is something like this...
Engine is running fine.... then all of a sudden
Volts gauge just Burries it self to the far right side... (+)
I shut down the motor. start it up again and like magic the
problem is fixed.... the motor has begun to cough/sputter
once or twice after I kill the ignition.. but upon start up
everything is okay again..
Am i right in thinking voltage regulator is shot??
= too much fuel?
and if this is the case does this simply mean a new alternator?
Any thoughts on this is much appreciated.. Just thought id check
in with y'all before i start ripping stuff apart.... thanks again! MW
