Default looking for prop advice: 382 FasTech

I have a 1998 382 FasTech Formula that I am currently doing an engine upgrade to. The current set up is HP 500's with bravo one's with no boxes. With 28" unlabbed bravo one props I get 20% slip at 3500 rpm (50 mph) and 15% slip at 5000 rpm (74-75 mph). When the engines are done I hope to get approx 600 HP at 5400rpm, I know I can get a bravo prop to get the top end rpm where I want it. With the new props I want to go after that mid range slip. Are the five blade props the way to go? Thank in advance. Jeff

Yes, 5B props work extremely well on the Formulas. Hopefully Troutly wil chine in he has a great amount of testing knowlegde, first hand knowlenge on this. The Hydromotive P5 and Hydro P5-X props work very well on your boat. When you are ready we have some test props that might be very helpful in dialing in your boat. Call me when you are ready.

Happy New Years!

Julie,
Thanks for the quick response. I know the water is a little thick up here right now, but I am just trying to do some research now. I will get a base line with the 28 bravo's and see if I bump the rev limit ( hopefully). Then I will try a local set of 30 bravo's to get us close so we don't have to send too many props back and forth.

You will almost certainly have to have the rev limiters raised. If you plan to get 600 hp that will probably be at about 5500. With the stock rev limiter you won't make the max hp your motors are capable of and you will be running too high on the torque curve. You want to get off the torque curve and on top of the hp curve at WOT. This will result in the least stress on your drives, prevent excessive stern-lift thus keeping the slip factor where it should be.

Drew, I think the 5 blade props were designed for the stepped bottom boats to improve the slip numbers found on a ventalated bottom.

Matt,
Thanks for the reply. The rev limiters hit at 5450 rpm, I will dyno the motors when finished and if the limit needs to be raised I will make it happen. Jeff
