28' skater true speeds

Just wondering what the true speeds that people are seeing with their 28' skaters? I see on the skater website these boats with the 2.5 or 300 optimax motors are running anywhere from 112MPH to 118MPH...just wondering if you guys can post the speeds your boats are running,a nd with what motors...

thanks,

joE

Hello, my 28 with the new 300 XS optimax has seen a best top speed of 110 mph, light on fuel, with 35 X 15 3 blade labbed cleavers, height above sponsons is 1.5 inches. I also wonder what others are getting with similar set ups.

A freind of mine, OSO screen name 'JIMKID Motorsports', has a 2004 28 with T/300X, running 14.5 x 34 3 blade labbed cleavers. He reports his top speed at 115mph.

Link for his boat is http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.c...o16254-en.html

My 2007 30 Skater with T/300 XS is slower than the 28. The 30 is much bigger and the 300XS do not make as much as the 300X.

My 30 can be seen at www.dkorinc.homestead.com

The 28 can be a very fast boat with the perfect setup and now weight. The 2.5 Skaters light on fuel and gear run in the mid to high teens. The 300 promax 28s run around 110, some are faster. The 300x 28's will run close to 120, again some have run 123-125. Skaterjim ran 127 with 300x motors. Dont know about 300xs, they are pretty new. I would say they are comparable to the older 300 promax setups. It is an extremely fun boat to drive and own.

28 Skater 300 promax's runs 114. Not mine my sons, but it depends alot on the set up. 2 boats running same motors, may run different speeds. We bought boat from owner in Fla. It ran 103 when we bought it. My son made a few adjustments with raising motors, working with props picked up 9 mph with same stock motors. Skater Jim on OSO has a 28 running 127 mph, may be faster by now. JimKidd has a very nice boat for sale, plus the boat is set up perfect. They are great boats, alot of fun.

You forgot to tell everyone that SkaterJim has no interior or rugs in it it's just a raceboat. My 28 skater runs 118.7 and it's a full pleasure boat.

Its pretty hard to classify a 28 Skater as a full pleasure boat. They are pretty bare bones to begin with. Jim's boat has been very fast with nothing in it, but dont you think all of the other claims are light on fuel, back seat out, etc? I bet 118.7 is your best run. How much fuel were you running?

dreamboater 10-29-2007 11:29 AM

Not everyone will be into the absolute top end, best number they can reach. It takes alot of setup time and tricks to accomplish numbers like that. I was just listing what is possible in these boats.

stainless 10-29-2007 12:28 PM

my 95 ran 115 after lake x moved the motors wider (54") and put on setback brackets (with 2.5s)

gearcase 10-29-2007 10:39 PM

wider

was that the whiplash 28 skater out of ocean outboard NY?

The boat had two 1/4 tanks and the back seat was in and it didn't have a back seat cover.

My 28 ran 119 with 95deg temp 70gal gas, myself and Joe in the Everglades(high humidity, and alligators) of course my motors had just left Diamond Marine, not stock 2.5`s.. 32x15 3 blade labed props.I am sure it would have run faster with more testing, but that was plenty fast for me!:D

Slow Ride 11-19-2007 08:07 PM

28 Skater

My partners 28, 2000 300 pm's ran 124@ 6800 rpm last July across Anchor Bay on Lake St Clair, Mich. 2 people 30 gals gas, full beer cooler, mid morning light wind, mid 70's great air. Running B-Blades 15 x35's turning in. Said it was a scary ride back end hunted like mad. Blew my 32 away!

dreamboater 11-20-2007 07:24 AM

Not trying to be a dick...but I dont believe it. For one thing the 300 promax's fall on their face after 6300 unless they are modified. I am not just talking about raising the rev limiter because its obvious that was done. Also, with all the additional weight in the boat...it just doesnt add up. I believe I talked to that guy through pm on screamandfly. I need to see that to believe it. He is faster than every single stock 300x boat and we all know the 300x's are quite a bit more powerful than the promax's. I have a friend that has been faster than that with 300x's, he has a lot of work and setup time in the boat. Not to mention no fuel, no interior.

Ryan Beckley 11-20-2007 08:14 AM

I was think the same thing.....those numbers are very strong but don't really ad up.

Slow Ride 11-25-2007 09:11 AM

He pulled away from my 32 at 116. Maybe his Garmin lies, but it locked in 124. Motors are modified slightly. Ecus done by Rapair. Its mainly set up and Bblades prop work. Never ran over 116 until last new set.

dreamboater 11-25-2007 01:46 PM

Skaterjim....where are you???

skaterjim 11-25-2007 06:26 PM

I would like to see it . does sound like the slip#s are to good to be true. bring it to a radar run and show us and we will all be very impressed with it

dreamboater 11-26-2007 09:03 AM

His slip numbers work out to be about 11% which is not all that great. I just cant see a 300 promax put up those kind of numbers, unless he is running the simon 335hp setup.

dreamboater 06-21-2011 11:40 AM

This was a great thread. What kind of numbers have been put up with 300xs setups? Any updates?

I wanna know how you guys got the tow line unhooked AT speed lol

Yes has happened quite a few times on the race circuit. However in calm water pretty difficult to blow it over from positive trim. I have experienced personally extreme bow lift running 3 blades with a touch of positive trim...felt like I was on the edge but probably wasn't. I have seen both skaterjim and Charlie T. run extremely bow high as well in flat water...thought Jim was going over once too

That's incredible...pretty sure that's double what I see with 300 promax

Wrap the tow line with one loop around a cleat or bow eye, hold onto the remaing line. The loop takes all the tension, you just have to keep the line from slipping through the anchor point. When the boat comes on plane simply let go of the rope and it slips back through the anchor point and your on your way. You can actually do it with one person if your tow rope is long enough!

Which boats blew over backwards? I raced 28's 0n and off from 92 - 2000 and don't recall one blowing over backwards. I've had a few roll over in front of me, but none blowing over backwards?
