36 Skater 1.24 or 1.35 Gears

I am currently running 1.24 gears and a Merc 5 Blade 35P 16" prop. I have finally got the bugs worked out of all the Rigging and engine issues and now can concentrate on Props and drives. When I bought the boat I pruchased a set of 1.35 gears and am thinking of putting those on instead of the 1.24.
Engines are quad whipple 7 lb boost 1025 HP and currently it just takes too long to build speed. I don't really care about going any faster than 145 but would like to get there faster. Rather than change gears why wouldn't I just run a smaller picth prop to get the same results? 1.24 to 1.35 gears is about 9% difference. From a 35 picth to a 32 Pitch is about the same 9%. Then if I start to care about going faster than 145 (which i'm sure will happen) it would be a Prop change only. Thoughts

Dude LOL!!!

I just went thru this exact thing. I have a 1.3 gear ratio, 16.25x34 Merc props which I found out the older 5 blade merc props are over pitched by 1.5. When it got hot and loaded with fuel and people I could barely pull 5000. I tried out a number of props 8 sets. Found the Herring 16.25x30 to be the funniest prop of my selection. The boat has Arneson drives and 700s. It accelerates to 100mph in like 10 seconds and throws water like an animial. I have pyrometers in the boat and I am building cylinder temps at high RPM so I need more fuel(This weekend). The Herrings want to lift the boat more then the mercs. I am going to try a 16.5x30 merc 5 blade. I am going to let it rev to 6000 and then probably use mechanical rollers for next summer to go over 6000. I spoke to a number of people and they told me the new Merc Cnc props are throwing blades since they did not put enough filet up front. Merc stated they would now warranty the new 5 blades for 1 year. My concerns are after the warranty is up. time will tell.

Have you guys talked to julie at throttle up about their cnc props? They could prob give you some excellent feedback.

Prop and ratios

Gatarone are you saying go with 1.35? I would assume you have tried everything over the years. I would guess that there is not a lot of difference between the 40 and the 36 Skater as far as props and gears go? How are you doing with the new single whipple system? I am going to probably switch this winter from the quads to the 5.0. Hoping for same HP that I have now (1025 on 91 Octane) with a little less moving parts.

I would go with the 1.35 or a 1.29. The 1.24 takes HP. I will let you know on the whipple setup. I think you need about 1300 hp to run the 1.24

I agree with the 1.35s.Use a taller prop at a later date if you want more top end.

skater40 do you run a 1.24 or 1.35 ? Are you selling your 40'? What is next?

I ran a 1.35 for the poker run/shootout.A new 40 ss is on the way.
