Jim
Just got my 28 back from Pete after six months in the shop. Fixed the tanks, blue printed hull and installled water ramps. Hull looks better than new. Ready to put the 300X's back on and run it ragged. I have not done the LOTO since '97 (yeah one of the first to do it!). Where is the the best location to stay and keep the 28 on the water for the weekend? Sam |
there having skater fest at some bar and there is a hotel right there i willm post it when i find out

Jim,
Your boat is defiantly a truly, one of a kind. From the X-Power Drives, to the LS7 motors, to the paint. Here are links to the photo shoot (49 photos) I did as you prepared and participated in the 2009 PRA Sarasota event. 30 Skater/LS7, 2009 PRA photo shoot, 49 photos 30 Skater/LS7, 2009 PRA photo shoot, 49 photos, slide show format For best results, choose the slide show format, and the click on full screen Here is one of them: |

here are the pics of the reworked blocks you can see the piston oilers and the new sleeves have a larger receiver on the deck the old ones had only 1/8 of an inch on the deck the new ones have over a 1/4 inch and thicker walls more stable
|
Nice setup!
what pushes the oil thru the oilers, is it oil pumps? ...and was the block thinned out to accomodate the thicker sleeves? thanks....noli |
the oilers are drilled into the main oil galleys on both sides and the sleeves are thicker now now we had to take some bore out of it we cut down the bore size .030 on a side so the new power number will be interesting we are going from 460 cu in to 449 cu inch will post dyno pics and numbers when done
|
being that new and smaller pistons are gonna be used, are you gonna increase the compression ratio?
|
Jim, What is with the scoop on the minivan? Your Skater is awesome BTW. See ya out there, Bill Jolley

Is the steering indexed? or will the steering be off centered as one uses it because of the hydraulic steering?
someone told me to use a symetrical steering wheel because it will become off-centered during use. |
That is true wheel never comes back to same spot and as to comp ratio we are not changing cause the amount we are decreasing the bore size is so small will not effect it and right now im in hawai will be back on the 29th and start the build up will post picks of the the assembly guys

Well got back started building rods ran into piston oilers so was back to the drawing board had to totaly redesign them took all week then sterted the build on friday night at 11.30had them short blocked by 3.00 am saturday me and rob my engine proffessor finished them on saturday after noon ran them both on sunday made good power 720 at 6500 only 8 hp less than last time with 15 cubic in less and we took 1/2 of point of compression out of them ran the hell out of one on the dyno tryed to break it couldnt thats good here are some pics going back in boat and testing before lotto
nd then started the build on friday night at |
Loooks great. Can't wait to see ya there. Sam
|

was out yeasterday on lake st clair good time boat ran awsome loving the boat more each day
|
We ran the leopoa poker run yeasterday on lk st clair had a good time got some time before we broke a splined input shaft to the coupler on the flywheel we knew it was the weak link took a look at them with just 20 hours on them and already twisted one so changed them both and was going to keep and eye on them well we tested it in the rough stuff and it failed back to the drawing board like i said this boat is really the true prototype 30 with a lot of innovation and we are getting it sorrted out but this half the fun will post pics of the ****ty merc part on monday

here is the pics of the broken part
|
Winner!
p.s. who is that in the picture on the desk? |
Jim what diameter is that spline? You have some pretty good torque
there. Dont know if there still around but Zeiger industies in ohio could make that up. |
Knowing Merc, the part is probably cast...
I love the boat/project! |
You Sure Had The Lap Top On That Alot At LOTO ,,,You Get It Squared Away?? We Had The 28 That Was Next To You,,,,
|
Hey Jim, It was great meeting you and your crew at the P/R. I'm very impressed with the boat and can't wait for my ride!:drink: P.S. there is a funrun on the 23rd on St. Clair if you can make it. PM me if interested and I'll email ya the info... CHEERS

i have a company making me some right now out of flexor steel its hard but not brittle perfectfor this mercurys were soft

FYI FLEXOR Steel
FLEXOR steel is both unique in its chemistry as well as its wide variety of properties. FLEXOR steel is a Chromium-Molybdenum-Tungsten alloy steel which exhibits a fine grain microstructure. All FLEXOR steel heats are a vacuum degassed, ladle refined, electric arc furnace melt (EAF & LF & VD). All FLEXOR steel is forged or rolled from bottom poured ingots. FLEXOR steel has a minimum ingot reduction ratio of 3.5:1.
FLEXOR steel's unique residual chemistry is a special blend that adds to machinability without sacrificing properties. FLEXOR is typically stocked in an as rolled condition. This means that when FLEXOR is rolled or forged from an optimal reduction ratio and cools in open air from 1700 F a fine grain microstructure is formed. This also gives the bar a consistent toughness measuring 28-32 HRC throughout the bar. It is important to note that FLEXOR steel does not need to be normalized or annealed prior to hardening from this condition. This makes FLEXOR extremely versatile especially when it comes to thermal treatments. Typical Chemistry Composition C Cr Mo W Mn S Si P .34 .85 .50 .50 .80 .015 .30 .015 Physical Properties Density 7.543g/cm3 per ASTM B311 Specific Heat .16 Btu/lb/°F Mechanical Properties 30 HRC 40 HRC 45 HRC UTS(ksi) Per ASTM E8-04 147 183 225 YS 0.2% offset Per ASTM E8-04 134 171 205 V-Notch Charpy Impact Per ASTM E23-06 80 45 21 RA% Per ASTM E8-04 64 60 50 Elongation Per ASTME E8-04 21 18 12 Poisson's Ratio per ASTM E111-04 .282 Young's Modulus per ASTM E111 30900 (ksi) Properties may vary depending on microstructure, grain size, chemistry, hardening technique and overall ingot reduction. :angry-smiley-038: Hopefully they won't fail !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
