I use to have 340hp Diamond Marine 2.5's, top speed was 122 with half fuel and 98deg. Unfortunately got some bad gas and smoked a powerhead at 26 hrs, should have just rebuilt, instead I bought these 300XS motors. These things accelerate hard,I am spinning 32x14.75( acceleration props)they seem to top out at 112 with 34x15 3 blades, I have not tried any 4blades yet, this spring.

How much better on Fuel ? Here is my game plan , when fuel hits 5 gal I will plop on pair 300XS DFI powerheads . I'm on the lookout for cheap pair 25 or 30 inch set . Why a 25 or 30 inch ? There much , much cheaper and I only need powerhead , I will sell off the rest of the crap

That's why you buy one with warranties. Not some motors put together in a garage. You are correct 300x's are time bombs. Pay now or pay later.

Hi my name is Shaun Torrente and I am only posting to clear up a couple things.... First off I absolutely work out of my garage at my house.... My garage happens to be a 35X30 with 3 10' doors but it is at my house... The first strokers I built I ran and tested on my personal 24 skater and that boat is still running today with it's new owner up north... I ran the hell out of that boat and the stokers have been together for a little over 2 years now... Double Rigged I took your comment to be a little condescending and I do not know why because you know me and I have tried to help you in the past with propellors and such (I test all the dewalds that we have developed over the last 3+ years).... Secondly to say 300x motors are time bombs is a bit of a stretch especially if you compare them to XS motors... I love all things mercury, if it was not for that company and the great people that work there I would not be where I am today, But an XS motor is more of a "time bomb" than an X any day of the week and twice on sunday.... 90% of the time a 2 stroke fails for 2 basic reason lack of fuel or ignition (timing problem), the other 10% of the time a part just fails (rod, crank, fuel pump, etc...)...Now an XS has 12 injectors compared to 6, 2 fuel pumps compared to 1 and a compressor (which has been an issue) that the x does not even have... So by my math i would take a X for every reason other than economy....I have owned or raced just about every late model high perf Mercury and I can say without a doubt the best weekend go fast motor Mercury has ever made is the 300X...... I will not talk money on an open forum but I will say that Larry (kevlarkat32) is getting alot for his dollar.... I do this because I enjoy it and I am blessed to be able to race boats and make a living, so for me it is more of a supplemental hobby....

Lastly I have a 93 28 Skater completely redone (new tanks wiring, etc) with 2 2004 300x motors under 200 hours

Shaun,
I apologize if I offended you. First off I did not know you worked out of your garage and the comments were not necessarily directed at you as nor was anyone elses. I think the consenus was that there are no real engine race shops (Diamond/JSE Racing Etc) that build 3.0L Race Motors every day for the offshore circuit. Diamond Marine is know all over the world for their motors as I am sure you have raced a few in the past but currently do nothing with 3L's . I appreciate your efforts with Dewald also. I have also tried to promote his product and gave input as well. As far as the debate for the XS versus the X's that will go on for ever. I personally consider fuel mileage as part of all around weekend boating as well as every day conditions. I would put my 300xs set up against any 28' skater out there. At the end of that day no one will be running over a 100mph in the ocean. Having a 2yr warranty is a bonus as well.

Lastly I have seen Shawns boat and pics. It is a nice rig.

Double Rigged no harm no foul.. My apologies for taking it the wrong way... Marty and Joe @ Diamond are great and do a great job with 2.5s and i will not work on any for that reason... there are plenty of guys out there (far better than me ) already doing it!!!

I was looking hard for a 30 Spectre back in 2008 but found my 32 Skater . I would hands down take a 30 Spectre over a 24 or 28 anyday , well built , good looking and dirt cheap ! This one is only 47 K
