OK, I serviced by 3.0L sportmasters today, and as always I have gotten 16oz. out and in the lefty and 38oz. in the right. I drained for 24 hours before filling and measured what came out and what went in. I am guessing that the two bearing adapters, thrust bearings and races take up the extra space in the lefty.?? My lefty oil is always much dirtier than my right. Thoughts??
Standard always comes out looking fairly clean. Counter comes out dirty, sometimes really bad. Standard takes more fluid during a service. One thing to keep in mind... While pumping new fluid in, after it comes out the fill hole, as though it may be full..., set down the pump, wait 15 minutes, then resume filling. I've sometimes added an additional 8 ounces, every time. |
David Like he said. Totally normal. I actually change my left twice to every once on the right. Big thing is to check the magnet for any debris. |

Hey Steve, the trailer looks great! :ernaehrung004: The rear view would sure look a lot better with a set of Dewalds on the lowers though. ;)

Any of you Skater boys gonna visit the Bay area or Delta for the best boating weather over the next 2 months?
We have an awesome group of twin outboards with Skaters ranging from 28-32' that I know of. I believe 7 or 8 along with several other brands that join us almost every weekend. There will be several trips to SF Bay, Petaluma, possibly Half Moon Bay, the Delta (all the time), Sacramento, & other spots. |

2400 horsepower on the Petaluma River
Took a little ride this Saturday, 1) 32 Skater, 1) 30 Skater, 2) 28 Skaters, left the upper Delta with the 2) 28's, picked up the 32 in Pittsburg, CA, joined the 30 in Benicia, CA cruised down to San Pablo Bay and up the Petaluma River. I would guess 200 + round trip from the farthest point. Working on a slide show as we type. ;-)

I let a buddy of mine take all of the pics on this run for 2) reasons.
a) It's the sh*ts to take pictures out of a 28. b) If there's any fuzzy pics, we've got someone to blame. ;-) >>>>>>> http://fullscreenphotos.com/a7455 |

I was with some buddies on the Delaware river last week. We were trying to make the best of the nice weather with the mix of outboards including Chris with his 24ft Skater. They captured some video.

On a 27-28' boat the promaxes are desirable for a couple of reasons.
1. I love not having to mix oil (verses 2.5) 2. I love the torque and being able to run over 100 @ 6000rpm 3. The 300 promax is probably the most reliable of the 300+/- hp Mercs because of the lower rpm, the lower compression. (requires less octane than the 300x) 4. I'm @ 500 hrs (5 times the safe usable 2.5 lifespan) and still bust 100 with 150 gallons of gas and 4 peeps. I have no intentions of tearing them down or modifying them and reducing their reliability. If I was to try and get a little more out of my max's, I'd probably just modify the rev limiter and let them turn 64/6500. Our 28 "Tunnel Vision" (name take off from our race boats named "Double Vision") originally had 300 Pro Max Motors, it ran amazing @ 105 or so, we then put 300 X motors on. It ran even more amazing @ 112-115 , just lit the boat up. Our 32 also named Tunnel Vision had a pair off 300X on it, that boat ran around 106 constantly and somewhat faster low on fuel etc. amazing boat and beautifully balanced, it felt like it would run through anything, and it did. the 1000 higher RPM was what we needed. although the 300X motors used crazy amounts of fuel and tended to break things, many powerbeads, and I mean many, and a few gear cases. still the best pleasure cat imaginable. |
I agree, The 300x is the best motor for that size cat. As you can see I am partial to them as well. I would not trade them for the 300r nor the 400r. Now maybe a 450R LOL! |

Awfully quiet in here......

It has been. I hope everyone is boating.Tis the season.

What is everyone running for gear lube and oil for 300xs??

Awesome. My 28 ships today. Cant wait!!!!
I see on your signature that you have a '96 28 Skater. That is the same year as mine, but we did a complete restoration/modification in 2017. The wraparound windshield from Lee Aerospace is awesome. We do most cruising at about 85 and can easily talk. |
Any winter projects going on? I’m going to upgrade my gps and switch over to str brackets.
