28 skater race hatch

Does anyone have photos or build drawings of a race hatch for a 28? I would like to build one.

Flightplan 01-24-2015 05:20 PM

I'm pretty sure LAriverrat has one for his 28. Send him a PM, I'm sure he will help you out.

Edit: just remembered his rear seat is all the way back, still might help.

Flightplan 01-24-2015 05:21 PM

I've got one for my 32 if you are just wanting to see one. No pics on my ipad though.

Here's the pics I have of the one for my 28. I've never had it on, and actually don't ever plan to put it on. The 28 is my "daily driver", not my hot rod....... I don't doubt I'd pick up 1-2mph on top if I pulled the heavy back seat out and put it on (benefit from weight loss and aerodynamic efficiency, I just don't ever see myself going through all the effort to do it. I regularly take back seat passengers with me.

FP, Yes post anything that you may have. I am pretty inventive. Just would like to see what is out there! Thanks, David

i got one 4 sale

.

If you build one, check out how Larry designed his hatches with a built-in cooler cool!

The raised Skater logo is also awesome!

LAriverratt 01-26-2015 09:49 AM

think my hatch is slightly lighter than the seat LOL. ( its much lighter) If I had re-rigged mine I wanted to lighten the rear seat as much as possible...move it forward adding the storage area and alter the race hatch to still cover the rear seating area if I wanted. not sure if that would have negated the additional speed but it would have been cool to be able to cover the rear seats and get he race look.

The only problems I have found you need to be cautious when
Taking the hatch on an off so you do not ding your gel or paint
I would suggest using a hoist system when you do get one David !

with the seat move forward the hatch would be much smaller and easier to handle...still would require at least two people.

I really like the look of that hatch and logo. How would you empty the cooler? How would you open it when full? Can and bottle damage?

I believe he made this hatch for his rear compartment.

tom kennedy 01-26-2015 12:45 PM

An if your anything like me,with no kids an just a wife ,an your friends
Seem to be busy that day it really sux lol!!

Tom, NEVER say "just a wife"! That will only get you in trouble (or it would me). I feel your pain with no help with projects like that. Is you hatch composite honeycomb construction? Do you feel that having the front open causes a lot of trapped air to create turbulence and drag? Seems that a vertical component would be more aerodynamic. David

Andy 01-26-2015 07:27 PM

Would a 28 hatch be the same width as a 24?

tom kennedy 01-26-2015 10:26 PM

Yes the wife remark was not very nice !she
Is a trooper when it comes to my addiction with
Fast boats, the hatch is glass non honey comb
Const .I think at high speeds the bow attitude
Is high enough for the air to pack under the hull
An the rest deflected up an over the wind screen
An the gap on hatch ! It would be nice if some
One would test the closed style hatch tho.

tom kennedy 01-26-2015 10:33 PM

I do think skater Jim may have had a closed in style hatch on his
28 there may be some pictures out there floating around of it!

Double Rigged 01-27-2015 07:12 AM

Of all the years of the guys I know with the Mobil One boat and setting kilo records they never used a closed in rear hatch other than it go all the way up to the back seat like Dale's boat had.

No a 24 hatch is not as wide as the 28.

I think it's kind of like a pickup truck where the air is spinning around in the bed area and causing drag. Put a cover or lid on the bed and the air will flow over the bed easier.
Same thing with the race hatch. The air won't get trapped spinning around behind the front seats and cause drag.
Trying to remember but pretty sure my 24 picked up 3-5 mph with the race hatch on. Besides, the boats always look cooler with the hatch on!
Always ran the standard Skater race hatch that ends just behind the front seats.

tom kennedy 01-27-2015 11:07 AM

3-5 May be abit steep ,they deff look sharp
On a the 24s an 28s

LAriverratt 01-28-2015 07:13 AM

the handling should be noticeably different at high speeds with the hatch shouldn't it?

tom kennedy 01-29-2015 04:28 PM

I didn't really feel much diff in handling in the 120s

LAriverratt 01-30-2015 07:01 AM

well I don't think I'd be making any hard left or rights at 120+ to find out if it turns better with the hatch on anyway LOL :grinser010:

tom kennedy 02-12-2015 11:04 PM

Any updates on the race hatch David?

Taboma 02-14-2015 11:40 AM

I need a piece of honeycomb composite panel approx. 6 feet x 4 feet. Does anyone know where to source a piece that large? I could only find 4' x 8'.

Onetime 02-14-2015 11:45 AM

Am I missing something here? Why can't you get a piece 4' X 6' out of a 4' X 8' sheet?

lightspeed 02-14-2015 11:51 AM

you should by the one i have a whole lot easier than makin one

Contact Chris Mills at boat customs. We are making panels for my build. He can make whatever you need and ship it or I'll bring it to Arkansas when my boat is done if you are not in a hurry. Heck he could probably paint it up to match your boat if you have the paint codes.

adk61 02-15-2015 10:53 AM

Nydacore, if honeycomb core is desired, coosa if solid core is desired ... any composite supplier should have it... avail in up to 4' x 8' sheets

Yea, Sorry 6 feet X 7 feet approx.

VIP Transport 02-15-2015 03:03 PM

Just tab two panels together.

Taboma 02-15-2015 03:52 PM

How specifically is that done?

Makes more sense now!

Taboma 02-16-2015 09:33 AM

Can the Nydacore material be butted together and glassed over on each side and still achieve structural rigidity with the finished piece? To say it in another way, does the "joint" in the core weaken the composite with glass faces at the core joint or is the strength achieved with the glass skins in the same way as a steel beam relies on the flanges for bending strength and the web is there just to separate the flanges?

skate 02-16-2015 10:16 AM

http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-...ement.html%23b

Found this over on the Hull Truth

tom kennedy 02-16-2015 10:24 AM

If it helps at all David there is a 1-2" flange
Around the perimeter of the glass hatches from
Skater that does supports alot of the hatch strength
An keeps it rigid,

Taboma 02-16-2015 05:04 PM

Skate, That tread was not found?? Tom, I was trying to make the hatch similar to my small w/ seat hatch which is a cored material approx. 1" thick and really light. I just an trying to figure out how to cap the edges and make a splice with the core material to make the size panel I need.
