think this was right after I got it back from having the tanks done and blew the soot out of the 2.5's on tickfaw.:D new carpet made a huge difference!! wonder where it is now??? and what it looks like!:lolhit: |
I took the picture at Sarasota when it was new.

he told me a story about racing it I think down here at lake pontchatrain when the boat was pretty new before the sport master lowers were on the 2.5's....they were waaaaay out in front of everyone, then of course a lower let go LOL. is that rope at the water line holding the outboard to the transom? |
Looks like bungee's it seems like A LOT of the older outboard boats did that, I'm assuming to help the brackets and trim keep the motors in when coming in and out of the water while racing. Not sure if it just wasn't necessary or people like the ability to trim all the way up because no one seems to do it anymore.

We still run bungees today to help with mid bushing life.....

http://www.screamandfly.com/showthre...r-sale-in-Ohio With tanks done. So.......If you give me a new hull, you can not do a 300xs boat with Garmin, interior, stereo and props for under $100k unless you can do the work yourself. Trailer is worth $5k. I pretty much ended up with hull, trailer, and new interior for $52,500. Look at my build thread and you will see how you can spend $100k fast. Just my opinion......buy something done that someone (like me) got excited, went overboard, and is now ready to do something else. I wish I would have bought the blue 28 from up north with a new Skater trailer, new paint, new interior, 2 year old motors, analog gages for $100k. I would have $60K + spare change to put into our race boat then and shill have a nice 28:faint2: Oh well, it's only money.....TRUMP is President so I'm gonna get keep more of what I earn so it was all worth it!!! |

Remember it is about the Journey! You only live once as you say LOL. We all spend too much on our boats. That is what you do when you are passionate about something. Someone who is serious and knows what things good things cost will come along. Most have no idea what it costs to do things right. |

No regrets here my friend......just want all my Skater brothers to have a real dose of reality and know what doing this really costs. |

Someone who is serious and knows what things good things cost will come along. Most have no idea what it costs to do things right. You build them to use and not to sell! That stuff adds up quick and typically nobody really appreciates it if you decide to sell. When I sold my 28 there were 7 on the market. I had to part it out to get my money back. The motors went to New Zealand! When I re-rigged the 308 with 400Rs the parts sold quick at 50% of retail plus shipping. Like one of my patients once said it's only money and I can make more of that. |

October 13 2016 Real close to 3 years invested, about year 1 1/2, I threw away all receipts and stopped collecting them. ........... I didn't really want to know. It's done now, and I'm "Lovin it" No doubt its expensive, rather you do the work or pay to have it done .......... But it's worth it. We're no doubt crazy, it's why we all get along so well. |
urs did turn out nice as is distinct with the twin canopys
well worth the time/parts invested I did an old school tripped Excalibur,,, ran it for 2 yrs since finished upgrades/resto and taking a bath to sale with no power just to start all over on my 28 skater but know when done is right and will be in the gulf having a blast he wants 35 as is with bad tanks,,,,, and 50 regelcoated,,,,? is why regell the whole boat,,,,, any1 know the background of what that hulls been through as been raced from day bought as I like finding original hulls just for the reason to see its condition and usage ,how cared for vrsing covering up the bottom,,,,,,paint or gell |

Wow, I'm late to the party! Here are the three I've owned.......... My first 28 - the red/white/blue 28 ('97) purchased in Sept of 2001, re-rigged/painted to Princess Hooker/Speed Racer scheme (started w/ 2.5s, ended with 3.0s). My second all white w/ black brow 28 ('96) w/ 3.0s. And my last 28 ('07, hull #124), started w/ 15" Diamond Marine 2.5s, ended w/ 15" DBR 3.2XSs.

The one that started my Skater sickness - my buddy Rick Bowling's 28. I believe it's a '94. That's me in the backseat at the SCOPE Poker Run in August, 2001 - bought my first 28 the next month!

And this thread would not be complete without our brother, Skater Jim's (RIP) beautiful and ultra-fast 28 w/ Diamond Marine 15" 300Xs. Nobody took performance in a pleasure 28 as serious as Jim did. Nor did anyone do as good of a job at it. His was the most kick-ass 28 ever in my opinion. I tried to buy it from him at least 2 or 3 times in the past 7-8 years, but no matter what was going on in his life, he'd never part with his 28. He loved telling me how he beat 90% of the inboard boats at whatever run he last attended, or how everybody thought he was running some fully-modded time bomb motors. The reality was that they were not that far from stock, and were actually very reliable motors that Marty just massaged a little of his magic on. The secret to his 28s performance was the relentless pursuit of performance, and Jim's keen knowledge of how to make a Skater run.Let us always remember our Skater brother Jim Melley................

^^^ Well said Dale. RIP. He had the most beautiful 28 ever.

Amen. Jim and Garth were both 28 owners and great guys.

I bought this boat in August this year and now have it on the Gold Coast in Australia. I'm absolutely blown away with how awesome it is. Would love to know more of the history of the boat. Its a 1996. Refurbed a couple of years ago
