Mids are on. Just a few pics with the cowlings on. Unfortunately motors NOT under them yet. Got the shift shafts cut and welded. Hope to work on the powerhead install tomorrow.

Powerheads, wingplates on. Working on steering lines, drain plugs, and cutting dash for electronics next.
Man on another note this website is dying it seems. Not liking it so far. Maybe time for our own Skater Facebook page and blow this place. |

Outboards don't draw as much interest here it seems.

You should do it. I will be seeing it down here on Friday for rigging, interior work. Had to move some things around to make room and prep the shop
|
Bob's boat looks like it's coming along nicely Ron! It's going to be great to see it up and running soon, posting the same #s as all West Coast boats of the same size with 400s. Lol Looks like it will be ready to throw on the scale soon - it should be between 3,500-3,700#s fully rigged/dry. It should run right there with Jim (RIP) and Tom's 28s. Keep up the good work and keep posting pics! Don't get discouraged just because everybody's busier boating than internetting right now - we still all want to see the progress!
|
Ron, What's that thing with stripes???

lookin good Ron !! Tom if anyone could appreciate 15" minds it you! It is really sad that the new motors have lost the edgey kick in the butt mid range that the 300X have. I definitely think this is the route to go if your a haul ass no stereo or wenches in the boat kind of guy! |

If you guys know anyone looking for a cool boat let us know. Not sure what David is talking about LOL |
Facebook is so much better because it's easier.
Easier to post pictures - don't have to look sideways or "upload" or blah blah blah No moderators Great mobile app Great internal messaging I've almost stopped posting on forums sites because of its 20x more cumbersome and honestly this new OSO design is terrible. Take this OB Skater group to FB and it will be fun and informational again. |

Boat finally made it S. FL. Lot's of work to do. We begin to hit it hard Monday!
Boat is really nice. However for a side by side comparison to the 308 here are a few pics. |
Looks like fun! Post some photos!
|
It is amazing how much larger the 30 is!
|
The small ones look like babies for sure- This is a cool project with the new 28 and new X motors its like turning back the clock...

I'll be in on a new 28 Skater FB page. Great idea

Work has begun. Step one need to protect all work surfaces! Blue cover guard the only way to go.

Installed fittings in rams for steering hose. Have to be careful working the fittings so the are in the right position. Takes a little work back and forth.
Also installed some nice skater supplied ring eyes. |
Underwater Lights Install

Here are some pics of the installation process. From layout to drilling holes. Notice we used a counter sink on screw holes so not to have screws chip gel coat. Good amount of sealer and taped light to make clean up easy using a thin applicator to remove access first. Pretty simple process. These are Lumishore dual color surface mounts. Blue/White

Where are the water ramps?
|
Zero, you can see the port one in the first pic of the post above yours. It's just to the outside of the drain plug.

Here you go Jim!

More progress today. Had to change tilt tubes to longer ones because of the 15" mids/clamps. It pushes the motor back 2.5 inches. Parts supplied by Latham.

You wont find many 28 Skaters with 3ea Garmin displays. 1ea 12" and 2ea 8" 7600 series. Old school motors and High Tech Dash with Digital switching.

Ron, why didn't you just have longer rods installed in the steering cylinders? That's what Steve did for my Zieger rams when I did my conversion. You don't end up with that lever that could rotate the tilt tube and throw the geometry off. That dash is going to be the cleanest, most modern of any 28 dash in existence!
|
Dale, Not sure how it throws off the geometry on ours but that is the Latham does it. All the parts Bob got were Latham. Bob is a stickler for things being right and the motors turn a good ways lock to lock. Just like a standard system. You are correct though they could have changed the rods.
By the way who's indicators did you use for the trim? Do you have any pics of the installation? Thanks |

I left the Stainless Marine indicators in it, the ones that have the LEDs in the dash indicator. I liked the placement up high where you don't have to take your eyes off the water to see them, and the "no-slack" design of the coil spring tension at the dash indicator works the best of any indicators I've ever seen. I used Stainless Marine mechanical indicators in my 30 also - the "head's-up" style. Looks like Bob's 28 isn't far from getting wet!
|
We are using the same actuators but will have the pop ups on the console. We did have a clearance issue with the port motor and steering ram. Had to straighten that bend just a bit as it was hitting the Latham ram do the size of the Clevis,

A little prewire on the bilge pumps and float switches. Ready to be installed.

Also got started on the dash up front with the nmea 2000 backbone.

The water ramp is deeper on the side towards the tunnel than the outside mine and all I have seen were level and the same depth as the bottom of the hull and parallel to the sponson. This design actually makes more sense as it will project a equal amount of water to the lower which is perpendicular to the motor. My design will shoot a spray at an angle and the inside pickups will nor recieve as much water as the outside. Is this a new design or an old racer trick?
Ron I'm not questioning your boat guru wisdom but the separate bilge switch float loose like that would seem to be free to bounce and also have debri get under it holding it up. I have always used the enclosed floats. What is ought process behind using this type of bilge switch? |
Had Pete make a change to try something in theory on the ramps. Will see how it works?????
Regarding the pumps I agree with you Sam, however it is what Bob supplied to us. With 55hrs of total use on a boat in 7yrs and living on Lake Norman I was not to concerned with them LOL. I would bet bilge will never see water in it. |
Well I like the ramps. Let us know how they work. I'm still not satisfied with the hight of my engines.
