I'll be installing a new 3KW Westerbeke in my 2004 386 and wonder if anyone has any tips I should be considering (other than taking it to someone to do for me!). I'm particularly interested in where the fuel line hook up is made. I have pics of an existing Westerbeke install in a 386 and have some experience with already installed gensets in cruiser type boats (read as "big boats"), but forgot to get a pic of the fuel hook up. Any help/advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Scott - thanks for the note. I lost your phone number after we talked a couple of months ago. I would like to look at yours and maybe get some more pictures. Where are you located?

Haven't started install (it will probably be a few weeks before I get going on this). Don't have a total cost yet - new genset with Miami Boat Show price was $5012 (incl. sales tax). I'll keep you informed of progress.

Hey Farfrumwerken,
You can always give me a call and come take a look at my install on my 42 if you want. I know the Ft.Washington is out of the way but I thought I would throw that out there...

Wouldn't it be a lot less expensive just to use a portable Honda gen.?
What are the advantages of the genset?I was just gonna use the portable and use it for other needs when not boating.I can buy the portable for a grand, what are your opinions?I have no experience on gensets.

I thought about a portable (some buddies of mine use them) but decided against it for safety reasons. They aren't certified for marine use so if you had a problem like a gas fire or dropped it off your swim platform for some reason (remote, but possible, especially in a raft up), your insurance won't cover your loss or any other liability you might incur if someone were hurt.
Most folks put them on the swim platform when they are in use, but I've seen some in the cockpit under or behind one of the bolster seats. Even though the Honda is pretty small, either place takes up room I didn't want to give up
It's really a matter of how much risk you want to assume vs. having a clean install in the engine compartment where it's already set up to do.
