Question VHF radio location

I'm considering mounting a Icom VHF radio in the same location that sonic does on the 31ss, starboard side of the cabin door entrance. Does anyone with this factory install location wish it was in a different location? Pros & cons?

Here is a example pic taken from boats.com.

Default VHF Radio Location

I had a 31 that did not have a VHF radio in it. I did not like the location Sonic choose. It looks like everytime somebody would go down stairs that they would knock the mike off the wall. I was looking into a Uniden model that I could mount behind the mirror in the head and only have the mike with all the controls in handle mounted in the dash. I thought that would have a much cleaner look .

In my 2002 31ss the vhf radio is located under the steering wheel to the right.

Make any decisions Wally? I'm still trying to decide where to put my VHF and GPS on our boat.

Due to the limited space on the 31, I'd go with the one that just has the cable and mic attached to the dash. The mic has the controls on it. I just wouldn't want it in the way of anything. Might be a little inconvenient, but you could mount it flush into the passenger dash. Lower right of driver seat and attach mic to dash.

The stock location is fine. No one bumps into it and its not in the way of anything. Go for it, it works.

Thank you guys for the good responses. I'm leaning toward installation in the stock location, which was my first intention but I wanted some of your experienced opinions before I make holes in perfectly good white gelcoat.
I have a new white Icom 304 (I think this is the stock VHF that sonic uses) which should look good in the stock location. I have also given thought to upgrading to the Icom 422 with the optional command mic as some have suggested above which can be mounted in the cabin with the remote command mic under the helm.

I won't be doing the installation till May so I have more time to ponder over this...
