sonic 42 or 45
#11
Ok here we go.
The 42 has the same cabin as the 45. The difference is the third engine area in the engine compartment. There are a few other minor differences that won't matter at this point. I have had both the 42 and currently have the 45. The ride on the 42 is nice, comfortable and stable. From a personal stand point a few more HP than 500 would be nice as I think it is a tad underpowered. I've had the 502MPI which I changed out for carbed 502/450's. Top end of low to mid 70's. Not bad cruising range of around 50-55
The 45 has the additional length and the additional power due to the triple setup ( which you can get in both the 38 and the 42). Again, personally I think it has a better ride than the 42 and still has the same accomodations as the 42
The 38 is different. Cabin is setup different. Has a center entrance way with split bolsters unlike the 42 and the 45 which have a side entrance and side by side bolsters (yes I have seen a 42 with split bolsters). Head is still on the starboard side as in the 42 & 45. For a easily trailerable and fun boat I'd love a 38. Ride wise is different than the 42 or 45 but still comfortable and a little more "fun" than the bigger boats.
All Sonics can have AC/Heat, gensets and enclosures for the cockpit adding to the overall time you can spend boating. There are many other options that can make it even more enjoyable depending on what you want to do.
My PERSONAL choices are from big to small
45 but only if you want triples
42 if you want everything on the 45 without triples and the additional 3 ft
38 if you really want a good all around boat that is fun to drive
31 if you just plain simply want some accomodations and a great ride

nice resume of those 3 boats... clears things up a little bit. Still have to see them ''live'' to see what you just described...
Since you've had all 3 of them, how would you compare fuel consumption between triple and twin? Some say there really is'nt any difference some say triples really are thursty compared to twin, with of course similar engine package...
What are your thought on that?
I would not mind having triple, unless fuel is very different.

It's the burden of carrying the extra weight of that third motor and drive that definitely increases your fuel consumption. It's like 3 straws will empty a glass faster than two, but then again it might depend on who is doing the sucking and who is working the throttles...

I saw that 45 at hutchinsons in '03 when it was new. It was beautiful and optioned out the way i would order it. All the goodies, including the extended swim platform.
