Thats a tough question because most of the single engine 28 ss boats have had the original power replaced with huge single engine power. Friend of mine had a 2001 with twin sb but that doesnt really help you much. What speeds are you looking to reach? That hull in particular is going to take major power to get moving. I think they did away with the 28ss because the prowler was a better single engine option and the 31ss was a better balanced twin engine boat.

Would have to be a bastard on drives also with big power under that heavy hull, I would think?

I think making the boat lighter is a hell of a start. Sounds like big horsepower with a heavy duty drive w/extension box.... I really don't have an idea what it would take to make 90 mph happen. I know guys with prowler's pushing 700 hp not even getting 80mph. Which imo sucks.

i have all kinds of time.....cause im not in the water with my boat :lolhit: it sucks but you have to do what you have to do! 15 16 hour days its like having 2 jobs! she is going to be bad a$$ next year for sure

sonickevin95 09-29-2012 10:34 AM

Ridefast... I think the project you are doing is neat for sure. Im wondering what the lightning of the boat and the higher x will actually do for you in terms of performance. That hull just isn't a very fast hull so your back was against the wall from the start. Im disappointed we didn't see a couple other people respond to you that may have done similar things to there 28 ss already. Keep us updated, im pulling for you!

Me to, i know theres got to be more then just me. or am i the only nut trying to make a 28ss fast :lolhit: buying a really fast hull would have been easy. But i love my boat and it is going to be the badest 28ss ever :eekdrop:i hope :lolhit:

There were only a handful of single 28s built.

Venturing a guess, between 6 and 10.
Back when the old Sonic company was active, I believe it was discussed on here. Bruce may know the answer.

The 28 was their least popular/built model. It was barely bigger than the 26 and a pretty good jump to the 31. It was discontinued during the Richard Hewitt years. If loyal owners moved up the Sonic food chain, they usually went 26 to 31 to 386.

barely bigger than the 26 ? when i was looking for a sonic i looked at about 4 26s and my 28 and the 28 has a much nicer and noticeably bigger cabin. cockpit might be about the same. and the 31 was not even 2.5 foot bigger then the 28. I would have picked my 28 over a 31 to, but thats just me i dont want/need a twin engine boat.

28 ss

I used to have a 28ss Sonic, with twin 502 - 500 HPs. It was a jump up from my 21' Hydrostream. I kept the 28' for about 3 years, and then went to my current Sonic, a 1994 35ss.

The 28 had the same porpousing problem that the 26 does. As for speed, it was about a 73 mph boat. It did handle the rough water pretty good, and it did have a decent cabin with a regular head, a/c, and of course the pull out cushion which all the Sonic's should have!

I have to agree with the others who have posted on here; I am thinking you are fighting a losing battle looking for speed out of the Sonic.

So far your progress looks great. Good luck!
