In the state of LA Coast Guard Doc does not mean you don't have to register the boat with the state, and pay taxes. If it's a purchase from in state or the boat is over 10 years old you don't have to pay. Otherwise, by law you are suppose to pay them. The state has started checking with the USCG and cross referencing to see who has not paid taxes. It's pretty screwed up. I have bought three boats in the last four years. It's a PITA dealing with the state.....

Also, LA does now title boats. Starting late last year all new registered boats can get a title. Not sure if its mandatory but helps when you go to sell. If I remember correctly it wasnt more than $100. You can also apply for a title for your older boat that you have been owning before this.....

As long as it wasn't purchased from a dealer then no problem. If they changed that then every boat I look at just got 15k more expensive.

may deals have been with dealers...that's why I have been unable to get around paying the taxes. You are right if it's from an individual but sounds like they are cracking down on that now. Trust me I hate paying taxes but I haven't been able to get a boat registered without proof of paying the taxes yet.
