We stayed in Deland last summer for long weekend. We got there and boat starter failed so didn't run our boat. Place we stayed at rented us a 20ft pontoon boat and we ran around one day with that to see the river, had a good time. I think most of the river has speed limits but lakes are wide open.....I think. A member here (Cuda ) lives in Deland and is the resident expert on the area. Bottom line is we enjoyed it and will return, although might try the river up by Jax just for something different.

I go to river regularily. Launch in DeLand of Hiway 44.
One of the best ways to spend time on boat in Florida. Check out Silver Glen Springs, Hontoon Island State Park, and Discovery Channel special on St. Johns River.
There are resturants, springs, lakes and more---again best boating in Central Florida.
Cuda is great resource as other post said.

I am in the Fleming Island area (just south of JAX) on the river.
Poorsche is right Silver Glen is a great place, a little busy on summer weekends.
Gators in Palatka is good for lunch or dinner.
Outback Crab Shack is a good place to meet up with other boaters or bikers.
Clarks and Whities Fish Camps are closer to JAX
Downtown Jacksonville is the Landings with usually something happening on the weekends.
Enjoy the River !
