Is this a good area to go boating? Are there alot of places to go and things to do? How hard is it to navigate without finding the bottom?

Great place to boat, you can go up river, to Sanibel and Captiva Islands, down to Naples etc. There is a Ft. Myers offshore club that does a lot of runs. They are on the board and have their own web site. Lots of skinny water, you have to stay in the channels when on the inside.

I used to live there/run there and loved it. As already mentioned, the islands chain from Cayo Costa south to Ft.Myers Beach is the ****! If you want solitude, do the Gulf side of Cayo Costa Island. It's 9 mls of protected, undeveloped, gorgeous beach. Many times we were the only boat in view.
On the inside there's a nice canal leading into Pine Island and it's pub's/restaurants.
Ft. Myers Beach is a great place to anchor off the north end and wade in to all the tiki bars on the beach. It rocks on the weekends. Is also a fun lap around the island and is well marked and easy to navigate. Some no wake zones on back side though.
Off the south end of that island is Lovers Keys and that area always makes top 10 beachs.
Great area.
