Marco to Key West for Races
We are thinking about running a 36' center console to Key West for the Thursday of the races -- any reason why we shouldn't? I realize the weather can be iffy -- we will weigh the weather forecast before we take off...
I can't find a map of the race course online -- would like to map it out ahead of time to be sure we keep clear of any high speed traffic... Is it best to go around the South end to get back up to Stock Island or is it deep enough to cut through somewhere on the North end? I've been looking at charts and it all looks fairly shallow on the north side of Key West...

Do you plan on docking somewhere?....because the poker run that also goes down that week reserves nearly every slip within 20 miles of the place!

In the past, they have had a "FPC West Coast Key West Departure". I'm not sure if they are doing that this year. I would get in contact with "BobTheBuilder" here on OSO as he has made that run several times.
And/or you could always follow the ferry down.
There are no races on Thursday, so that won't be a concern.

I have not done cut through any of the lower keys. It can be done, but only by an experienced captain and/or with GREAT charting and plotting tools. Those featherbeds sneak up VERY quick, and they are also IMMEDIATELY outside of the channel markers.

Thanks for the replies, i will check with FPC... Yes i noticed the no races on the Thursday -- we are heading back to Marco on the Friday and there are 4 races between 10 and 3... I'm sure there will be a ton of boats and markers out there...

Almost a straight line from Marco to Marker 1 lighted bell buoy KW. Shortest route. On the return, If the weather is blowing from the north or nnw you can run on the outside to 7 mile bridge, then its again almost a straight line back to Marco.Coon Key channel will get you out of the weather sooner if its blowing. Picking you way through the Jewfish basin area is all bad and will not save you any time. Have fun
