Engine Rigging Placement Forward Or Back

building spectre 36 is it better to put motors in as a plug in or as a driveline. basically set the motor back or forward.

MY BOAT DOES HAVE BALLAST TANK SO WHEN IT GETS BUMPY I CAN FILL THE BALLAST TANK TO COMPENSATE.

I WAS TOLD IF YOU SET IT AS PLUG OR ALLTHEWAY BACK YOU GET MORE TOP END BUT YOU SACRAFICE A LITTLE IN CHOP.

LOOKING FOR TOP SPEED WANT TO FLY (CARRY)THE BOW OF THE BOAT.

COMMENTS

DOES ANYONE NO HOW TO GET HOLD OF JAY THE GENTEMAN THAT USED TO BUILD SPECTRE..

ALSO WAS ZIPP EXPRESS SET UP FORWARD DRIVELINE OR AS A PLUG IN..
ALL COMMENTS WELCOMED

I also heard the same, they say on the Motions and Spectre if you set them back all the way you get more MPH. Here's a video of mine, its a 35 Motion and motors are driveline.....carries the nose well.....

I heard Jay was getting back into the cat business....
Per the net, his phone is 727-546-3000
If anyone knows how to rig the boat it will be Jay...

Any new word on that?

All of the 36's we rigged when I was there had 17" or 17.5" drivelines if I remember correctly. Zip was done with those same drive lines, and I believe 64" centers. Its been a while so I am not 100% on all the exact figures. I do know zipp ran 116 with me and Neil in it on lake tarpon, but it was light on fuel. what motors are you planning on running? does your hull have the notched transom or full bottom? I also believe that the prop shafts were about 1.5" above the running surface on zipp.

I have a 2003 36' Poker Run, 650 MDG's, motors set forward, shafts 1.5" above the bottom of the sponsons, notched transom, stock 34" B1 props,. 118 MPH max. Motors are getting freshened over winter so we'll see if we pick up a couple mph.

It carries the bow nice and runs with near neutral trim. A tunnel tab eliminates any porpoise at the transition between 60 and 80.

According to Jay's pre-delivery test notes when the boat was new it ran 120 MPH with labbed 34 B1's. I had a pair of labbed 34's, but threw a blade before I ever ran it all out.

Here's a link to our club website with a trailer for the 2008 poker run on the front page. There's a pretty good clip of my boat near the end that shows how it carries the bow. Check it out... http://www.musiccitypowerboat.com/Mu...tion/Home.html

I suggest setting the motors forward. The first time you need to work on them you'll really appreciate the easy access.

Good luck, have fun, be safe!

Jeff

Thank you
to everyone i will be puting the motors on driveline.
the motors will be set on rails so we can move them forwardor back.
we well put them on a 12 in driveline a start from there.

I spoke to Jay and he said to put the motors on a 17 in driveline. I will start at 12 and see what happens and at 17 in and see what happens..

thank you
mike

My boat was originally Jay's personal boat, so without measuring I'll bet it's set at 17" as he recommends.

Sounds like you've got a good plan!

Take care,
Jeff

I remember rigging that boat back in the day. lol

I always though it was funny how the very first MDG 650 boat ran in the upper 120s but after that one, the engines didn't seem to have the same power. After the first 650 boat, the rest all ran right at 120.
