288 MCOB exhaust tips
 

I had issues with my captains call on my 03 288. I finally got it fixed, had to replace the entire control as it was all once set. So now I can get loud. But I would like louder. My previous boat, a baja had straight pipes out the back. My brothers 454 has those same pipes and it sounds better than my 496. My exhaust pipes are tapered down and have noise deadening effects. I'm considering changing the tips for the straight ones like Baja.
I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and if they were happy with the results. Advice and tips welcome. Thanks.

First off, are your existing tips baffled or do they just have an internal flapper? By tapered down I assume you mean they are angle cut. If your current tips have no internal baffling, and are angle cut, changing them out for straight cut tips will not result in louder exhaust. One thing to consider is on a Baja the aluminum platform will allow more sound to escape than the built-in platform of the Sunny. Short of going to headers, you could remove the turbulators on your existing manifolds to help with the exhaust note.l

The current tips are baffled. I could not think of the right term for that. By tapered down I mean they are about 4 inches diameter where they come out of the boat but they tapper down to around 3 inch diameter at the tip, straight cut. I can get a pic if that will help but I thought most sunnys were similar..
The tips I am considering replacing them with are approx 4 inches all the way and the top part goes out further than the bottom, I guess that is what you call angle cut.

The baja I'm comparing to has a built in swim platform, as did my old baja. So they should be similar in that regard. Thanks for your reply.

I've had these 4" corsa non-muffled/baffled tips on my last 2 Sunnys. A stock 496 won't get any louder than using these.

Straight tips are better for the sole reason of being able to use/add external flaps..and will noice when they go bad vs an internal flapper.

In my opinion of course.

Ahh Those are the ones I was thinking of going with Wasted Income. I like those tips. I have an option from corsica to go with the straight cut flapper on the end. And they are $50 cheaper. Is that what you think is better SB. I never considered the internal flapper going bad. Do both put out about the same about of Umfffffff aka noise?

I've always been under the impression that straight cut tips with the rubber external salisbury flaps are quieter than tips with internal flaps. I don't have any data to back it up though....but I do like how internal flap tips look compared toe the clamped on flaps.

Yeah, I sure agree with you on the looks of those tips. I had my baja 17 years with those tips and they did great ....but I do not know if the internal flaps had issues. I never checked them. opps.

If you go Corsa with internal flappers they will be stainless flappers with silicone boots to help prevent rattle. They hold up quite well. However, you need to check the flappers a few times throughout the season to make sure they are there and in good working order. You can lose a engine quickly if you lose a flapper and are not aware. That is the plus side of a straight cut tip with an external rubber flapper. And do not buy a tip with an internal rubber flapper. Junk! those flappers end up sticking straight out after limited use.

Yep. I check mine after every outing, while scrubbing the scum line off the transom and polishing the tips. I am paranoid of flapper issues.

I had a boat with the internal rubber flaps, and I agree that they plain suck. Ended up replacing them 3 times in the 5 years I owned the boat.
