Removable "WIND SCREEN" completed

I have the same post on an other forum, But I posted it here as well in case there's some interested but are not on the other forum;)

Ok guys, Here are some pics of my removable wind screen. I had a freind who works in a machine shop make up the clips, Then I had some custom lex-an glass cut up to fit. I used lex-an instead of plexi, because lex-an can bend without cracking like plexi.

I had a long piece that goes all the way across, and 2 short individual side pieces for the days when one person wants the screen,(wife) but the other one doesn't(ME).

pic 2, Here there not bolted up yet. I used 2 sided tape to adjust them to the right hieght, then I drilled and bolted them up. Only the end clip on both sides end up in the fiberglass, All the otheres end up in the aluminum pannel.

From about 20 feet away, you can't even see that there's lex-an there.

I made it out of 1/4" thick lex-an
6" tall with the last 8" of the end tapered to 5" (for the sporty look) That leaves about a total of 4" above the fairing.

I had two test pieces on last Saturday when I went out for my 82 MPH run, and they worked fantastic!!!! My partner lit a Cigarette at 50 MPH without ducking down in the seat!!
The flex in the lex-an was not detectable at those speeds, It's a rock solid system. We then took them off to compare the feel of the wind, but that lasted till I hit 30 MPH!!!and we stopped and put them back on!!! it was only 57° that day, and it felt like 30° without the screen. But with them on we went for a good 2 hr cruise.

Here I just have the lex-an resting on the engine hatch so you can see them a little better. Mom is making up some slip in sleeves to protect the lex-an when not in use. Arn't mom's great

So the Lexan isn't pre bent? Very cool!!!

Kanookstr 05-08-2003 02:05 PM

No the lexan is straight, but it can be bent without breaking or cracking. I watched them bend a piece almost 180° in a breaker, (like they use for sheet metal) without even a stretch mark. Pretty cool stuff:D
