JBS got off easy in my opinion.

We think that we are covered, when we buy unlimited towing coverage, but we are not covered when we are sinking or upside down.

Last year Team Shocker / Lamborghini of Miami had a major battle with Sea Tow after flipping in Sunny Isles. In the end, they paid the $8,000 to get their boat back from Sea Tow and subsequently sued. I do not know the outcome.

Jo from Pantera was a victim of pirates in KW a few years back. Shane Barret was a victim in Point Pleasant in 2002 when he flipped his 26 Scarab. They charged him close to 4,000 to tow him back upside down. Im sure many others fell victim as well.

So what can we do to prevent this overzelous billing from towing companies?
Is there anyway that the race organizer can just contract a company for the day for a flat fee? Then there would be no nonsense?

Really? Think about the weight of a 50' boat going 100 mph with a scoop in the water.

At the Harrison Michigan OPA race, boat US provides us with free towing. I however load a 5hp 2 1/2"pump in my center console and a bunch of lines and provide it for an over turned or sinking boat.

Thats the way it should be,fellow racers/boaters helping each other, not the guy trying to make money on the misfortune of a accident ,especially the smaller teams that are struggling just to even be at the race.

I agree, but If it were not for accidents and breakdowns, Towboat would not be in business. With the dollar amount value of the boats in question, I would not want just anybody towing it in. What if your boat hooked to it being a nice guy and tried to save it, and didnt have pumps, and it went down in the inlet taking you down with it

There is a lot of liability that goes along with salvage, lots more than it appears on the surface, and every situation is different, hard to put a flat rate on. A tow is more like just a tow though, lots less liability, and that is why they can offer this service unlimited for a set amount(yearly unlimited towing service).

True, When ya needem.Ive never been in that situation before, I think they sometimes abuse the salvage $$$

Question, could a 39 cat or 42V pull down my 38 Hustler?

When its full of water upside down dragging like a parachute it just might.

I also believe they abuse it a bit, but they got ya by the sack at that point. These rigs are worth WAYYY more than my house, if my house were on fire, and the fire department wanted $9000 to put it out, I think I would hand them the credit card.

It would be great if Pepe and Jo of Pantera made a big race cat. I`m sure it would be a little heavier but would run through anything for years.
