As Randy pointed out there is not right or wrong just different .
There are 3 main thing as Randy posted, so this is the facts and difference. 1 RPM ...Stock Merc 5450 SBI rule is 6000 but real life after tesing and dyno time all the motors make max HP at 5600-5650 * To sum it up you r talking about 200 RPM and the reason for this rule change is that the RPMs CAN'T be teched or enforced. So to make it fair all all the racers not sum this rule was put in place 2 Cubic Inch max cubin inch is 509 same as Merc does when they do a rebuild and take the motor one over that have been for ever. Merc did that to my F1 motor 10 yrs ago * So no change there. 3 Compression ...Stock merc is 8.4-1 - 8.6-1 SBI rule is 9.0-1 * You tell me dont see a deal breaker So to sum it up the reason for the changes is to make the class more affordable, and to be able to be teched. Merc seals and be bought anywhere even online and have been used for yrs and there are teams that have be caught many times. The other thing that makes it more affordable is a team can do their own rebuilds as long as it meets inspection or you can bring it to many different motor builders that can do as good a job as Merc at half the price. Tyler,Scorpion, Smitty, Corba, Lt Reggie, Cheif, and Potter. Our goal is to save the racers money and not be helled hostage by Merc and dictae price of rebuilds or sealing cost. The cost of shipping alone is a savings of 600-800 hundred if you have a local shop near you and with the list above pretty much covers a lot of ground. Again not better just a different concept, with the economy affordable racing is a must. Last point there is a lot of talk about the Fountain and Outterlimits not sure all the confusion they are 15 yrs newer then most of the boats they run against and you will see more new hulls coming out, not sure its all about the motors. I think it would be disappointing if a 15 yr newer hull didnt run better. |
That sounds good in theory. But it sounds like approval to cheat. What keeps a guy from building a 540-557 with a cam change and ECM calib. Is SBI really going to take these engines apart. Was this rule changed after "someone" was "allegedly" cheating ? Guys cheated when they were supposed to be sealed. Now it's legal to build your own engine. This is just my opinion not trying to start a fight. I am very interested in running this class.

Flat rate,
Your point is exactly what is going on. IMO, it's a HP war. He who has the most wins. So it becomes all about how much $ you have. The statement that the rules where changed to save the racers $ in my opinion completely false. More Vortec and 525 have blown up in the last two years in SBI than in the previous 8 years. The are two choices here, that simple. As far as teching, that i know nobodys engine has been tored down to see if they have Merc internals. When Merc rebuilds our engines they are all 502 cubic inches to say otherwise is just not true. RPM can be monitored but its easier no to tech for it. Hope you do build a SVL no matter where you race. Good luck. Wil |
Flat Rate,
Thats not an issue the engines are check for Compression and Cubic In at the rsce sites, also drive height. AS far as an engine being torrn down your rigth Wil i dont think anyone has been torn down in any org. but atleast SBI knows the cubic in and compression of every motor , with the cheater seal who knows what an engine really is . I in yrs past the last few that were torn down with merc seals were cheater motors. As far as enginers blowing up dont think I know of any, there has been problems with some Merc sensors on the Merc computer putting teams out of a race. |
Awesome pics Jeff great job as always .

So what about cylinder head work or camshafts?
|
Frank,
I am not going to name names but we both know that at least 4 teams that currently run SBI have had major issues with their engines, one team at the worlds had to replace their engine so to say that you don't know of any failures just some sensors is a bit far fetched . Wil |
$1500 problem solved, or continue with hope and change, and now racing for 3rd place.

Mark,
Steve M has pitched the idea and it falls on deaf ears so here we are again. In offshore nothing really changes much. Wil |
