New York & The Y2K!!!!

2 Attachment(s)
The short version: 2006 Y2K ordered w/ yet to be determined engine/drive package. Due for delivery around May '06

The long version:

Well we pulled off the shortest weekend in NYC history... atleast we feel that way today (man am I tired)!!!

Left SoCal Friday night about 1 1/2 hrs late, hit JFK @ 2:00am est... Checked into a ****ty hotel by the airport (don't ever stay at the Hilton Garden Inn, Queens NY) and tried to sleep some while dreaming of my new Baby!!!!

We got up, left Queens and headed to Superbabi's pad in South Jersey. Met up with Superbabi (Gary and Marcy) about 11 am and went for a ride around the bay... With all the talk of new boats and what the Y2K can do, I forgot to call FX-10 (Rick.. So sorry) and tell him were running late and we won't make the shop by Noon. (Oh and for future reference, traffic blows in Jersey as well as NYC). Ended up doing Lunch on the water... not the best food but it was beautiful weather!!!! We ended up at Superboat at 5pm, Met JC face to face (what a genuine and knowledgable owner!!!) and 4 hrs later we have a 2006 Y2K on order. Right now about every detail is up in the air so what its gonna look like orhave in it is still a mystery. Should be sorted out by the end of the month though. Rick (FX-10) showed up at the shop and we really started to BS about boats, speed, and all the crazy ways we could all kill ourselves in one ( the turbine Y2K idea might take the cake). Next time Rick we'll do dinner forsure!!!

With the purpose of my trip complete, it was time to head into Manhatten for the wife to get her shopping fix. Checked into the Crown Plaza Time Square around 11pm had dinner at Ruby Foo's about midnight and was passed out about 1am. Sunday was a whirl-wind of shopping and a plan flight at 6pm. Home in SoCal about 9pm.

That was my weekend how about you all ;)

Pics are Superbabi @ Lunch and my 5 min. of joy driving!!!!

Jayhawks,

Thanks we had a blast... Superboat is a throw back to the old school kind of boat shops but meeting JC puts your worries to rest. Oh and one ride and you'll be hooked!!!!

Power is looking to be the Merc 525 or a Phaff 600efi, just need to see how much the boat is going to be and hopefully one of those fits in the budget still? Keeping my fingers crossed... Let me know if I can be any help to you when you decide to head to NYC!!!!

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

Sounds kinda like the trip we had. Superboat land, but had to be in Time Square for the wife to get her rocks off for a couple days. I like the Long Island coast. Did you? As for power, remember the 525 is somthing like 540 hp. What is Phaf's actual numbers? price's yet? I can hook you up with Adrenaline if you want. He built one hell of a motor for mine.

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

Faster, The LI coast was very interesting... unlike anything we have out here. We thought it would be a nice boating area but that was the view we had from the expressway? Never really had time to stop and look. Phaff600 is something like 600+ hp and 675 ftlbs... should smoke a 525. I just got back from the Phaff shop and it looks like it'll be the 600 w/ a Imco drive, just waiting on the prices. Whats a ball park price for a 600efi from Adreniline? We are planing on heading back out around the holidays to check out progress and see more of the sights.

Krak, Man that boat looks CLEAN!!!!!! When the boats finally finished we plan on coming out to Long Island for some fun before we take it out west. You'll have to come on down and join us! When does boating season start in the New England area?

Thanks HB!! I'm in Texas, and we boat 11 months/year - I now have ~130 hours since last October when I picked up 'One Bitten'. Let me know if you have any questions, this forum has been a great resource, you won't be disappointed!

LOL, no problem - this group accepts us wherever we are!!

I'm on the Gulf Coast, outside Houston. Clear Lake feeds into Galveston Bay (nearly identical water conditions to the LI area) and then in to the Gulf. I'm up for a trip to Texoma, but being that Texas IS a BIG state, its about 7-8 hours away....hard to imagine that for some of my northern friends ;). I'll host any fellow SB'er that makes it this way!! Come on!!!!

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

Just got off the phone with Phauff and IMCO has a new drive coming out in '06. Standoff box w/ a tranny rated for 1000hp... Hmmm its tempting

FASTERDAMITT 09-15-2005 01:41 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

That's good cause I'm not a fan of thier drives as of yet. Too many problems for what you pay for them. I've seen XR's last longer.

Come On Rob Be # 1 To Do A Surface Drive................you Will Shoot A Mile Long Rooster Tail !!!!!

z.zuperboat 09-15-2005 04:47 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

If you do the surface drive you need to remove the notch in the transom according to rick from arneson. And your adding a tranny so your going to need extra power for that also. Props are only about 6 times the price of a bravo.

SUPERSTITIOUS 09-15-2005 06:12 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

Plus I think you would loose leverage by running on the surface, loosing bow lift. I think the "joint" would be 1 large motor, and imco splitter into 2 trannys and 2 arneson drives tucked real close together

If my buddy's friend winds up getting the Y2k hull for his 1200 hp turbine, that is the drive hes putting on the y2k.

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

Gear splitter into 2 bravos would be fine. You could run them close like a stagger setup. Does anybody have any idea how much a gear splitter would be? Im sure if Rick called IMCO every new Y2K would have one. HINT HINT

ZZ is the gear splitter that reasonably priced ???? Also you would have to do a 4 point motor mount, correct ????

Titan 09-16-2005 07:01 AM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

That Imco gear splitter looks awsome. I wish I had read about this product before the hole was cut in my new boat...

It takes the torque of any engine and divides it between two drives. What a great idea!!! Plus you save the weight of the second engine and still have the manuverability with the second drive.

Can't wait to see someone else besides Nordic use it now!!!

z.zuperboat 09-16-2005 07:02 AM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

I have a 6 point motor mount now. Motor front and rear, also rear tranny mount. I cant even begin to guess how much. If I remember they compared it to a number 6 drive package using a drysump splitter 2 extention boxes with 2 shorty drives. I think JC,S boat would be a great demo. Have Rick do it and dont tell John, what do you think?

Titan 09-16-2005 07:15 AM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

:D

But a 496HO will not be enough power to push the newest Y2k. Remember it cuts the torque and the HP in half. Half of 400hp or so is no better than 2 egg beaters. And cheaper too!!

FASTERDAMITT 09-16-2005 12:00 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

You'll have to move the engine forward alot. And it does add some weight. This splitter is huge! What kind of power will it use to operate it? A standoff box uses about 30HP. I would guess the splitter may take 50HP from your peak HP numbers.

I still love this drive. Handles massive HP

HuntingtonBeach 09-16-2005 08:05 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

First off... Rick that is one huge ass drive and would be over kill for anything that i could even dream about affording right now... But i still Love ya!!!!

With that said, the artical in HB showing the IMCO split drive said something along the lines of near zero loss of Hp ( was dry sumped), and equal Hp to both drives. So with the 1200hp (think thats what that engine had?) you had 600Hpish to each drive. The real question is what would the hull do with the extra weight hanging off the transom... In a Y2K if you run a tranny is there room to move the engine forward or would you have to move the bulkhead?

I'll consider the Idea till something firgures it won't work or i find out how much we are talking for all the shizznit?

Oh and since i was thinking about 600hp would that seem like enough for a duel drive set up or would more be a neccesity? Notice I said neccesity and not want ;)

Would duel drives even be race legal?

FX10 09-16-2005 08:19 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

Rob,
The hull wouldn''t have a problem with the weight. We have many 30''s with twins out there, Tempests and a Y2K. The Y2K we did has twin 6.2's, 320hp, I heard it does 84. It''s hard to say what one will do with a splitter. 300 each, minus the weight of the motor, plus take into consideration the weight of the splitter and trannys.

HuntingtonBeach 09-16-2005 08:25 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

The spliter uses the cone clutch in an XR type drive so no other tranny is needed... seems a lot of the speed was gained by reducing prop slip... the article said 11% thats damn low for a twin drive.

Scary to think I'm considering being a guinea pig....

FX10 09-16-2005 08:27 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

did you find out the cost of the splitter ???

FX10 09-16-2005 08:27 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

and x tra drive ???

FX10 09-16-2005 08:27 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

and steering

HuntingtonBeach 09-16-2005 08:33 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

Steering is the same as a twin drive so basically the same cost as a single just add the tie bar

2nd drive 9k-15k depending on which one you pick

Spliter TBD... after 5 here so I cant get a hold of anyone at IMCO

I have the HB next to me rereading the write up.. seems they used dual rams on both drives so the steering looks kinda funky... That spliter cant add any more then 18" total... is there enough room in a standard setup to fit that?

HuntingtonBeach 09-16-2005 08:36 PM

Re: New York & The Y2K!!!!

I'll try and scan the article tomorrow (scanner is at my office) and post it so everyone can add there $.02
